SMEG (which stands for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastall − obviously) is an Italian manufacturer who have been making household appliances since 1948. And where as they make a number of quality products, they’re best known for their retro style fridges available in a range of flashy colors, including a special Union Jack edition.
Some people might choose a SMEG because of its clean lines and minimalist style, but they’re quite practical too. Smegs get the job done with plenty of built-in storage, a freezer compartment, and it saves on energy compared to a full-size fridge. And although there is a mini on the market, the standard SMEG stands at just 57.5 inches tall and about 24 inches wide.
Check your local market for a SMEG retailer, the average price being around $1,700. And get ready to tell you friends you own a genuine Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastall!

I really want one and have a small kitchen so it would be perfect. That first one would look perfect in my kitchen.
We thought about a SMEG but found a second-hand Northstar fridge by sheer chance. The model we lucked into is full-size, so it won't fit in the counter-depth space we had in mind for the SMEG. But it does have the same fabulous retro lines, and I didn't have to worry about my two biggest concerns with the SMEG: the poor quality reputation of Italian manufacturing, and the risks of my friends laughing themselves to death over the name of the fridge.
They are the cutest appliances that add instant charm to any kitchen.
I have never seen one in person and wonder how they are as far as keeping veggies crisp, when I had a sub zero I could keep greens in the fridge for over a week and they would not wilt.
I never realized I wanted a pink and white kitchen, how cute is #2 second row??
Great looking product, but really unfortunate<a> name.
Ha, those pink ones made me smile.
Love the look and the variety of colors and designs Smeg offers. The photos are lovely but kitchens #2,4, and 7 are not small. The second photo could certainly have used a larger fridge.
Smeg fridge? wow.. Red Dwarf moment there..
Red Dwarf fans rejoice - we can now having a smegging refridgerator. :)
The (not so) dormant BBC sci-fi fangirl in me loves this.
I'd like a SMEG - but unfortunately, it appears that the bottom-freezer units aren't available in the US...
We have been looking into getting a SMEG, but have read some really bad reviews the craftsmanship/quality. Curious if anyone has had a positive experience with theirs?
I cant read/hear/say the word "SMEG" without thinking "smegma". Call me immature--but it's the truth.
Love the first image. And how awesome would it be to have a fridge that says "SMEG".
Oh, Lister.
Also, that fridge should arrive fully stocked with vindaloo.
I did a lot of research on getting a retro-style refrigerator (and even asked Apartment Therapy about it - http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/boston/good-questions/sources-for-retro-style-refrigerators-good-questions-105698
I didn't pursue getting a SMEG because in the U.S., it appears the only retro-style model they sell doesn't have a separate freezer, which wouldn't have worked for me. I do love the look of these refrigerators, though!
I really, really wanted a SMEG but was put off by the tiny size of the icebox (not freezer) on my favourite model and not being able to decide on a colour ;) as well as the massive price.
Oh, and I worried that it might not work in my next kitchen since the hinges/handles aren't moveable from side to side like they are on other fridges.
Still think they look great, though.
I adore the SMEG, but I think fear of potential unreliability would lead me to get a Big Chill instead.
SMEG-head! Yeah, first thought whenever I see their ads in Dwell is about Red Dwarf, and I've heard iffy things about their quality.
I love the Smeg both for its looks and for the Red Dwarf reference. If I didn't rent my home, I would rush out and buy one today.
I used to want one of these so badly, but I did a bit of online research on a few product review type websites and heard nothing but bad reviews, and people wishing they had never bought one. Lots of complaints about lack of service from the company too, even when still under warranty. Such a pity that such a gorgeous thing can't be functional AND stylish. Still, they are lovely to look at. Sigh.
I have one and honestly it's as cute in person as in the photos. Also I have zero complaints about the functionality, yes the freezer is small, but that is not an issue for me... its super quiet and is surprisingly spacious inside.
I have nothing but good things to say about it!
Oh, you canNOT tease a Union Jack fridge, then not cough up the goods! For shame.
Yes, these are amazing but I too can't stop thinking about smegma. *Shudders*
thepragmatist just made my day with that link.
I love the whimsy of this kitchen....Is there more of this to enjoy somewhere ?
OMG, after reading abc123's comment about smegma, I can't stop laughing! It's near impossible to finish reading the comments without giggling.
Wow, I'm surprised to see that Smeg apparently has a bad rep in the US? Over here in Europe, things changed in their brand 5 years ago, and now they're known for being great quality, solidly built, well worth what they charge. I have friends with Smeg ovens and fridges, and they're doing quite well.
For lovers of that word, there's another company named Smeg!

"Société Monégasque de l'Electricité et du Gaz" - it's Monaco's electricity and gas company :)
I have been drooling over these for years. Now they are finally available in the US but I must resign myself to drooling because of the price.
The orange fridge is mine! How exciting to see it, and my kitchen, on apartment therapy. I've had mine for three years now and love it as much as always. Mine has been perfect and still literally brightens my day every time I look at it. There is no other fridge I would rather have.
SMEG appliances have been widely available in Australia for over ten years now and are considered a premium appliance brand. I have also had a freestanding stainless steel gas stove, a stainless steel dishwasher and a Convection Microwave oven, and all have been super stylish and reliable. Likewise friends and clients with SMEG appliances also like them.
I want.. no i NEED one for my kitchen which is getting updated in a few months!!!! YEah!!!
Oh man, these are so darn classy!
It is a truly fortunate/unfortunate name, undoubtedly, depending on your point of view.
Red Dwarf's Lister is just using a shortened slang term for smegma when he calls people 'smeg head'. I can't decide if I'd laugh and love it in my kitchen, or be incredibly turned off by a reference to dick cheese prominently placed at eye level on an appliance. Hilarious, yes. Appetizing? Not so much.
I think ulrika must have a industrial fridge, like a huge SUV to combine with her style.
SMEG now do undercounter versions of the same style fridge.......... ooh glad to see some of you watch red dwarf - didn't realise it had made its way over the ocean......saluting you all!
You can get a left or right hinge Smeg, so why do many of these have the hinge on the more awkward side?
