Q: My husband and I are turning our old family room into an office/library and my dream was to remove the carpet and stain the concrete. However, the concrete has been altered so many times there is no way to save it. I am looking for an idea on a budget that replaces the carpet with something more sleek and smooth a chair could move on. Ideas? Oh, and on a budget...a very tight budget.

Editor: Manda, the first thing we thought of were FLOR tiles. Their 19.7 inch square carpet tiles are easily installed, totally versatile, and work well underfoot (or chair!). Depending on how large of an area you need covered, it can be quite affordable, too, with individual tiles starting around $4.99 per tile. They have a huge selection of styles and patterns, too, so you're bound to find something to fit with your aesthetic. Also, FLOR has an ambitious environmental effort. All of their tiles are made with renewable and recycled content and are recyclable.

MCT, Marmoleum composite tile, is probably your cheapest greenish option (VCT is cheaper, but is full of icky vinyl and needs a lot of care). It comes in many nice colors, and you can do a pattern or solid - whatever works for your space.

Marmoleum Click would be a little more expensive, but easy to install yourself with no adhesives.

Skimstone - though the fumes are pretty bad. Wasn't hard to learn how to do, and everyone thought it was amazing.
Why not paint the concrete? The paint will cover up the uneven color of the concrete, and you could even work any cracks or rough patches into a floor mural.
What is in the picture? That is lovely!
Ah, scratch that. I see the Image: Flor credit
