My publisher, Clarkson Potter, has said that I can leak just a few photos from the new book (coming out May 11), so that's exactly what I'm going to do over the next month. The book is packed to the gills with them (all beautifully taken by photographer, Jim Franco), and then surrounded by tips and a big, long resource section at the back. Each main chapter focuses on one part of the home. This first peek features the kitchen from the cover of the book and a bamboo office in Brooklyn. Enjoy!
Each of these pictures is part of a bunch of photos that focus on each room in detail.
The Under-Bed Kitchen

From the book: "You usually can’t do too much to alter the shell of a rental apartment, but this one was in really bad shape. The solution? Covering every surface with fresh paint and color — including the floors. Not content to simply set off the kitchen from the main room, the resident also used a subtle pairing of pale gray and white paint to add dimension to the kitchen’s structural elements."
The Mini Library Office

From the book: "The strong lines of these horizontal wraparound bamboo shelves make this compact office seem wider than it actually is, while keeping masses of books organized. Beautiful, affordable, and an easily renewed resource, solid bamboo has become a popular "green" alternative for the home. Separated by heavy sliding doors from the rest of the house, the office easily becomes a soundproof retreat"

Shaw's Original Fir...
I cannot wait for the book's release date! It's going to be such a grand resource for those of us living in small, cool spaces. I've a feeling many homes are about to get even cooler!
We built a small beautiful adobe home,825 square feet, half the size of our previous home, for our family of 3 and I can't tell you how much simpler our life has become. See our blog about the adventure of building with mud. ahousemadeofmud.blogspot.com
I wish more people would come to understand the freedom that comes with only having to take care of a small place.
Looking forward to it!!
I'm very excited about this. AT's Real Homes, Real People is one of my favorite design books. That's how I discovered the site. I hope this book becomes my new favorite.
Now that is something to look forward to!! I might just put in an order right now!
On the strength of those two picture alone I want to buy the book. Is it available in the UK or do I need USA friends to buy it for me?
Looking forward to this, Maxwell, as I'm obsessed with the styling of and utilization of small/tiny spaces. I mean, c'mon, how great does that lil' kitchen set up look?!!
That office is a dream...
I will buy this book.
I'm super excited about the new book (loved the last one).
The little OCD elf who lives behind my right ear forces me to say that I hope this sentence is not in the book:
"Covering every surface with fresh paint and color — including the floors — with fresh paint and color."
Surely an editor came to the rescue.
I can't wait to see it and post about it on my site. I love small space decorating. It's really fun and exciting.
Is that navy blue kitchen featured online too, or only in the book?
When is the new small/cool contest going to be???
Can't wait!
this book looks AWESOME, I can't wait to get my hands on it!
wow, this would be fabulous for my college student!
You tease! :-)
It's available to pre-order in the UK yay!
@Stencil-Helen I've pre-ordered a copy via amazon.
Looks great so far. Looks like you guys (and gals) will be getting more of my hard-earned money.
:)
Beautiful examples. One thing I'd like to point out is that even those of us with somewhat larger spaces can almost always benefit from decorating ideas from "small, cool" spaces. Nobody ever has enough storage, and efficient use of space is great for everyone! I look forward to the new book, congrats!
I love the kitchen set-up - it's such an innovative way to capture more space in a small place. Can't wait for the book!
I can't wait! Will it be available in Brazil or we have to order by Internet?
Ooooooooooooohhhhhh, I'm SO excited! Can't wait for the book to come out. I've posted an announcement on my blog (http://mocca-and-me.blogspot.com). I'm going to pre-order right now!!!
This book looks amazing- I'm looking forward to being inspired to spruce up our 1920s brick cape! Thanks! Will pre-order now!

I can't wait!! I love that office photo ... I need inspiration for a 100 square foot room double as a craftie space (read:long/wide desk top) and a hang out space. Seems impossible, but I have a feeling this book will have lots of ideas for me!!

Can't wait. I love books on decorating and maximising the use of small spaces in apartments. There are never enough. Down in Australia I don't think people truly understand what you can achieve in small spaces. I could spend my whole life just doing up small apartments to make them slick, stylish, as well as, useful and practicle. If only I had the budget. Looking forward to reading this book and updating my way of thinking!
Using my time machine, I already have enjoyed this several times... and am re-decorating!
I'm not gloating: it's just so damn good that I think it's okay to encourage you to think of your local independent bookstore when you get a copy!
Keep those jobs in your town, keep the tax dollars in your town and no more empty storefronts! *thanks folks
(...and no I don't have a shop or work in one!)
SOLD!! What a great book concept. Can't wait for all the nuggets of inspiration!
ka-ching! I never knew there was such a market for this sort of book. Not that I won't spend for art books, but I prefer magazines for this kind of pic/writing so I feel better when I tear out the pages I like and toss the rest after a while.
Congrats!!! Looks great!
Looking forward to this. More often than not the small spaces have some of the best ideas.
