As any graphic designer will concur, type is just as important if not more than any other element on a page. Still, even the best designers can use a little cheat sheet now and then. For those without a design background, a Cliffs Notes introduction to appropriate type usage never hurt. And, even if you could care less about typefaces, it's still a pretty poster.
Designed by Julian Hansen and available from Scribble on Everything for $22, the So You Need a Typeface Poster is printed on Astrobrights Eclipse Black 80# Cover with a metallic silver ink. This print is perfect for the home office of any type fanatic or design lover.

This is great, I would love to see the path that leads towards truly horrific fonts like Comic Sans.
I'm so bored with people that are "just crazy about fonts!" They're like the people that claim to love architecture, or be really into the Blues, but only know Mies van der Rohe or Muddy Waters.
fun! nifty thing to mock in our design department. :) (designers are the WORST for opinions on this stuff...)
Excellent idea, Luxx. I'm still trying to figure out what decision-making process leads Tiger Woods to use Comic Sans to comment on his finalized divorce, and inspires Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert to call out LeBron James. Is it the only option sports types have?
Useful and awesome!
Love it and will be buying now.
Also check out the Periodic Table of Fonts before you get this one!
fredbiscotti, you design snob. People have to start somewhere, and generally people who become well versed in things like this are those that fell in love with it. Don't be such a debbie downer.
@fredbiscotti - okay, but some of us are real graphic designers and actually know our fonts. You can say all you like that people just pretend, but some people have paychecks that prove otherwise.
I don't have a problem with real graphic designers knowing all about fonts. Hell, I don't have a problem with anyone knowing about anything. I work in large-scale construction and know all about it, architecture (and architects), contracts and building materials.
I just get so bored when people start talking about how much they love Helvetica or how they're such big architecture nerds, when really, all know they know is, well, Helvetica, or Mies.
Either way, I'm sorry but this poster is lame. Just like I wouldn't decorate my home with Tyvek cutsheets, I just can't think of a context outside of a copywriter or graphic designer's cubicle in which it would seem clever or attractive.
@fredbiscotti - home offices are pretty good places.
Thanks AT! My husband and I are both starting back to school (we are teachers) and while I have plenty for my walls (I teach Government) he has a harder time as a graphic design teacher. I know what you will say.... "design is everywhere"....but most is crud, not app for school or too expensive. So I made a large scale print of the periodic table of type and purchased the poster as a "have a great year" present!
Hey fred, bring some biscotti over and I'll put the kettle on. Then we can look at the poster together, because you know what? I just *love* typefaces! :P Smile, the sun will come out.
I like this poster but Uh Ohhhh... I smell a replacement for the ubiquitous "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster. After seeing it in 2 or more house tours, I'm sure I'll start to hate it.
Keep Calm Carry On in Helvetica.
It would be nice if something like this was online (maybe it is). Sometimes I do need help choosing a typeface for my presentations and such.
@ninakk: You've got a date. maybe you can tell me about your passion for Mies and Mid-Centry Modern, too!
I have this hanging behind my desk at work. No one's commented on it and I think my officemates think it's serious.
