You may like the economical and ecological benefits of using bar soap in the bathroom, but the pool of water that accumulates in your dish can seem to be the opposite of clean. Designer Nathalie Stämpfli has come up with two soap shaving devices that create fresh flakes for each washing experience.

The first model is affixed to the wall and allows for a one-handed push to collect soap flakes. The second prototype is a freestanding grater that can move with you from sink to shower and anywhere else you can think to take it.

White Enamel Flatwa...
NEATO!!
That is kind of neat but I am used to my liquid soap now.
I love this! I have a bunch of really wonderful smelling soaps that I simply don't use because soap dishes freak me out because of the way they look and the fact that multiple people are picking up the soap... ugh.
This creative idea seems so obvious *after* someone else thinks of it. Thinking outside the box seems a rare ability past an early age. Good for the designer!
Nice idea -- I'd love to get it, especially if it could accommodate differently-sized soap bars. On the other hand, soap dishes don't really bug me.
gah!! for someone who solely uses bar soap, THIS IS A MUST AND I AM BUYING ONE TODAY! hooray!!
It's soap! how dirty could it really get that couldn't just be rinsed off?
LIKE it, and handmade soaps too. It is a more cofortable way to use them.
I LOVE IT! I want the first type pictured!
This is too cool!
I love the wall mounted one! I am a bar soap junkie, can't go to a farmer's market without buying at least one bar. :)
I WANT!
Where can I get my grubby little hands on one? I checked her website, and it only says she developed them - doesn't say how much they cost, etc.
I'd LOVE one of these.
Is this actually for sale somewhere? If so, can someone provide a link. I think it's genius and I'd buy one of each.
It looks like she's a student or just graduated on homepage - someone needs to hire her! I'd love one of these, even though the underside is kind of scary!
I adore the mounted application. The hand-held one could be great but I wonder if it would get slippery while using.

love it too! saw this mentioned the other day on kottke
She is going to be rich, RICH, RIIIIIICH! I want to buy three of them. Tell me where. Tell me.
What are the ecological benefits of bar soap?
No plastic container.
This is a great idea, although I wonder if the soap in the wall-mounted version would stay dry enough to flake.
Love the idea. Looks like just a concept for now though and not available to buy?
@modernguy: Yes, bar soap is far more ecological than hand wash, for many reasons. Mostly it has to do with packaging and shipping. When bar soap tends to have far less packaging (cardboard generally) compared to a plastic bottle. They also tend to ship in boxes that are square, not weirdly shaped plastic bottles, which means you can ship more at one time, there by reducing emissions.

I love this!! I am a big user of bar soap and hate the discoloration (part of the bar is light while the other is regular) from water saturation. It seems this would solve that!
I want one! I hate cleaning out the soap dish.
How smart! But we need a hack for this. For instance those cheese graters that hold the block of cheese (or soap) as you grate. Or even a nice set that has a plastic sleeve to hold the soap (without touching it with your hands) and a little microplane underneath. But it needs to be one-handed. Think of the time, equipment, and cost savings, especially for large facilities, offices, etc.
Switching to RN mode for a minute, bar soap, especially in a waterlogged dish is actually huge a germ factory. Bletch.
I love this idea, especially since it can be hard to find non-antibacterial liquid soap, and that said liquid soap is usually full of chemicals and bad stuff.
GREAT IDEA, but no use if we can't buy it!!!
Thanks EC and Jose A, I didn't think of that.
I stopped using bar soap because it always dried out my skin and the soap scum in the tub but, I'll have to re-think it now.
This is so brilliant! I use bar soap in the shower, but have long been resigned to bottles for the sink. Hope to hear more on how we can purchase this.
No no no. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Bar soap is not necessarilly more ecological! Sure packaging and what not, but if you buy a bar soap made with palm oil you are helping destroy precious Bornean Orangutan habitat. These orangutans are higly endangered and need our help. Please avoid palm oil in cosmetics and food. And for that matter, teak furniture...unless it is FSC.
How does the soap get shaved in the first photo, wouldn't you need to press down on it with as you are shaving?
Awesome!
Neat! I am repulsed when my only option is a soggy round of bar soap, this would solve the issue.
Cool....but just doesn't seem practical. So while your hands are wet you got to shave the soap?
Hmm, I agree with the practicality of this. Why not the magnetic soap holders found in Germany etc? Those are great and no messy dish.

@rubyp3: You don't have a messy dish, but a messy what ever is under the holder, because the wet soap will drip.
Know it from my younger days ...
ingenious design, yes. practical, absolutely not!
As a super cheap alternative soap dish, check this out:
http://www.amazon.com/Kikkerland-Magnetic-Soap-Holder-Suction/dp/B003M2X2JE
It suctions to tile or mirror and holds your soap with a magnet. It helps the soap last longer, because it air dries and doesn't sit in a pile of goo. I love ours!
interesting !
