Q: I'm putting together my son's future nursery and desperately need a rug. I'm looking for a good quality, SOFT rug that won't shed or be a complete pain to vacuum (knowing my black lab will be shedding on it a lot). I'm hoping to find a solid bright colored rug that doesn't cost more than $100 and I'm having a difficult time finding one that fits all my needs. Anyone know where I could or have any good dog proof soft for baby and my behind good quality rug advice?

Editor: Readers, what do you think? Is this the Holy Grail or do you have some ideas for Chelsey? In my experience, cheap rugs are usually cheaply made so you might have the best look stalking stores for big sales or perhaps an online deal site.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Whenever I'm looking for a solid color I go to Lowes. They have what are basically carpet remnants (with the sides bound). You can get one for $70 or so if I'm remembering correctly. If you have a specific color need you might want to ask them (or another carpert store) if they have remnants, and how much they charge to bind them. Way cheaper than most area rugs, and they stand up to abuse just as well as wall-to-wall carpet.
Definitely get cut pile, which is so SO much easier to vacuum dog hair. No burber, no loops.
I agree with pp about getting a remnant. Some places even specialize in remnants, not sure if they are cheaper, but they'd likely have greater variety.
Also look at craigslist. I've seen remnants from brand new carpet installs listed for free.
We had one carpet from Ikea. It did okay for the price, but it was pretty ratty after just two years with regular vacuuming (we also have a large, short hair dog). We replaced it with a wool rug from Crate and Barrel. Obviously much better quality for a much higher price.
We have a bound carpet remnant in our playroom. It is a great quality carpet, soft & fuzzy. It is bright red and had them bind all of the edges in teal! The binding finishes it off so it doesn't have that rough looking grid backing edge. It lies flat nicely without problems. You can buy padding to go underneath (just like you with carpet) and it'll be extra cushy. I think I paid $50-$60 for mine total and it is very large.
My suggestion is to keep the dog out of the nursery.
maryshe...haters gonna hate. yeah, remnant is where its at.
Join Hautelook.com, zulily.com and gilt.com. They sell good quality carpet for kids that are marked down up to 60% off. If you need an invitation to those links send me your email and I send you an invitation. Also try Flor.com carpet tiles which is very easy to clean and cheap to replace if you get stains. That is what I purchased for my son's nursery.
Our dog sheds copiously. He is banned from all the carpeted areas of our house, but some dog hair still gets in. I assume we track it in on our shoes and clothing.
i've had good luck with overstock.com and the shipping can't be beat!
IKEA. We had a bunch of different rugs, including a high quality wool one, and nothing beats the cheap, synthetic ikea rugs. They're soft, dont show stains, vaccum clean in a flash, and hold up to spot cleaning. I feel stupid for wasting money on nicer rugs. Someday we will have a crazy nice expensive rug, but til then, with dogs and kids, its ikea all the way.
We have the Lusy rug in our kids' room, and it rocks. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70151707
