A readymade quilt produced locally with machine and hand-stitching methods.
We first came across design studio Haptic Labs and their visually intriguing map quilts last fall when they won Apartment Therapy's Design Showcase. In case you missed it, though, these heirloom pieces are worth revisiting. Soft-Maps are quilted maps of cities and neighborhoods that represent someone's unique place in the world, "an intimate reminder of home: where you’re from and where you belong." A perfect baby shower or housewarming gift, these quilts would look wonderful hanging on a wall, too.
The quilts are offered in three varieties: knotted baby quilts, readymade machine-stitched maps, and custom handmade maps. The baby soft-maps are custom printed and hand-knotted, and come in 20+ cities in the US, Canada, Australia and Europe. You can also customize each quilt with a child's name, birthdate, and three different locations. Readymade quilts are produced locally in New York using machine and hand-stitching methods. Each readymade quilt is produced in collaboration with master quilter Ruth Miner of Stamford, Connecticut who, with her 40+ years of quilting experience and her "painstaking attention to detail," ensures every quilt is unique.
Baby soft-maps measure 42″ x 36″ and start at $95. Readymade quilts come in a 50" x 60" throw size for $2,400 or a 86" x 92" queen size, for $3,600.
