Soil Lamp

Soil Lamp

Imagine a lamp that runs on free and environmentally-friendly energy forever. Well, you don't have to because Dutch designer Marieke Staps has created one already. And guess what it runs on?

Mud! Yes, you read that right. The metabolism of biological life chemically reacts with copper and zinc to produce enough electricity to power and LED lamp. The mud is contained in cells, along with copper and zinc which conduct the electrical current. All you need is to add a bit of water now and again to keep the chemical reaction happening and the lamp working.
