Before & After: Favorite Bedrooms at Domino

There are some amazing transformations featured in Domino's archives -- we only wish we could see the entire room rather than a cropped image. By studying the before against the after, you can take many mental notes about why the "after" works (shifts in spacing, change in color, simplifying or pairing different objects all have great effect). Some solutions are more obvious than others, but here are our favorite, powerful standouts, including the "before" of the room shown above:

Thank you for sharing these. If I just stared at the "before" photos, my mind blanked on the room's potential. Thus the "afters" were so worth gazing at to get ideas.

So many of these are an ode to paint and a testament to finally deciding to "living grown up" (so, a proper headboard, "real" window treatments), but also the power of "the final layer"... art, lamps, etc.

With my own client's this layer is very often a hard sell, since they think it either doesn't matter, or it will just eventually happen (and not all final layer stuff is cheap, either!!)...

These pics really prove their power.

that bedroom by patrick (the other one) is lovely. The simple switch to a more complex wall colour is itself a big but easy change. love the marble cheese tray under the roses. simple idea, handy, spares the wood dresser, adds light and cools down the surface.

I question whether that yellow canvas qualifies as "art".
Seems like a small amount of effort should be put into art, not just dumping a quart of paint on a canvas.
Maybe there are some fascinating brush strokes.

Thank you so much! That painting, entitled "The Space Between" came from Art.com. Just don't tell 'em I chose to hang it upside down (I know, I KNOW, a cardinal sin against the art and artist!).

P(too), thanks for sharing. I struggle to incorporate old family furniture with our more modern stuff, and you have great ideas. I think adding that final layer might bring everything together.

My pleasure! Modern art, modern lamps, and solid/simplified items picked for their simplified silhouette are all key to making that mix work.

I sometimes think of the mix as an Elsa Perretti pin on an otherwise conservative outfit, or funky D&G glasses on a man in a Brooks Brothers suit.

Cute afters...look at all the possibilities.

I really like the yellow painted canvas. Its super simple (as in I could do it without messing it up) and I love the impact it makes.

Domino is discontinued. They switched my subscription to Architectural Digest (blah). There may be older copies out there though.
