Name: Sophie (2.5)
Location: San Francisco, CA
Division: Single Room
Room Size: 30 square feet
Tip for Living Small with Kids: To keep things tidy in our apartment we keep pieces of Sophie in every room. In the kitchen she has a low cabinet for her kitchen toys, in the living room she has two boxes full of toys that blend with the room aesthetic. Her hanging clothes share a closet with the vacuum & towels, and her folded clothes are in the bottom drawer of my dresser. (continued below...)
We find that by dispersing it throughout the house the way we do with our own things, it prevents us from having clutter anywhere and it allows her to enjoy the entire home with us and "do what we do", rather than having to go to her room to do all her playing while we're interacting in the common spaces.
Also, the obvious: purge. There's no need to have clothes in her drawer that don't fit. Put them in matching bins and label them as you go to prevent build-up.
Biggest Design Challenge in this Room: The biggest challenge was striking the right balance between having plenty of visual interest for Sophie, maintaining a bright, cheerful vibe without overdoing it in such a small room. White curtains and bedding and walls keep things toned down. I had several more pieces to add to the walls and shelves, but once I started putting it all together it was looking like a crayon box exploded in there, so I resisted. It's challenging to not let it get excessive. We want it to be a relaxing space for her to play and enjoy every aspect of the room.
*Please note: the windows are locked at the top far beyond her reach & the door stays open while she sleeps & plays in there for plenty of air circulation.
Favorite Thing About This Room: We love how fresh, airy and uncluttered her space is regardless of the size. I also think it's adorable how much she loves her room. When anyone comes over, she wants to show them "Sophie's room" before anything else and wants them to sit on her bed and play with her toys and enjoy her space.
Thanks for your entry Katie and good luck!

This room proves that a very small space (when done right) can look spacious and stylish. Excellent work!!! Love it!!
I was wondering how you calculated the 30 sqft? A single twin bed is 20-25 sqft alone...seems like the room must be a little bigger than you think? (although small of course...just maybe want to check your math) Cute tho! I like the bright airy feel to it.
LOVE this! Also, pretty sure that is not a twin bed, but a toddler bed (so essentially the size of a crib).
Thanks! The bed is a toddler bed, and the room measures 5 feet by 6 feet.
Wow - great job making such a tiny space look spacious and cheerful! Love it!
ah, I see! what bed is that? cery cute...looks like a twin bed. very pretty!
Where did you find the pillows? They're delightfully colorful without being too "young." Thanks.
totally adorable! love the clean, uncluttered look with bright, cheerful colors.
LOVE <3
Fun, airy and colorful without being chaotic. Love it! I wish I had gone so much simpler with my kids' rooms!
Great colour in the accents!!! Looks very clean and open, even though it's so small!
i think it looks great...i love the white with the bright contrasting colors.
nice job! love all the color that just pops and makes the room so fun and beautiful.
really great entry! really deserves to move on to the next round... better get your friends voting! :)
i, like everyone else, love the clean white with popping colors... great space!
I love how grown up this room looks, while still being child-friendly. It reminds me of a dollhouse!
This is so cheerful and sunny. I can just picture a little girl loving this space.
Love it. So inspiring for sure. And the clutter free feel is ideal!
Thanks for the sweet comments! So grateful!! :)
@freyamix- the bed is actually borrowed from a friend who borrowed it from a friend! We're not sure where it originally was purchased.
@liebling- the orange striped pillow is urban outfitters & the other two are Rufflewood (etsy).
This room is darling. I actually had the same print of the girl and the puppy in my childhood bedroom.
Sophie has style bloodlines!
Super cute! Where is the lamp from, I've been looking for a cute orange lamp. Thx!
Adorable! I love the bright clean look and the contrasting colors--cheery even on a foggy San Francisco morning :)
30 sq ft is amazing! Great job! We have a huge 5 bedroom house and our girls will be sharing a bedroom because like you...we keep their stuff all over the house. Most of the toys are in my office so that I can actually accomplish things, they don't need a lot of space to sleep in. :)
I never would have guessed this is a closet. Lovely!
Thanks again! You're all so encouraging!!
@jenmaselli. It's actually an old lamp that I spray painted orange. It's really easy to do if you can find something with a basic base at a thrift store or something!
I love the green trimming around the clock and the white rocking chair! Great use of space. I'm impressed.
Such a great job on such a tiny space!
Love the bright colors & the decorative pillows you chose! Terrific job!!!
Wow. I really like this..love the simplicity and the colors!
