Q: I bought this great bamboo chair for 20 bucks and am willing to spend more on the cushions. We're looking at a website source that will cost $240 for a seat and back linen cushion. Since I've never done this I don't know how reasonable that is, but if I don't find out quick, my wife is "pulling the trigger" online. I'd like to source the cushions locally in NYC if possible, even if that still means spending $240. Suggestions?

Check out www.Foamorder.com! I'm getting ready to replace my couch cushions. They do custom cuts for a relatively inexpensive price.
there are so many tailors in NYC. maybe one has an upholstery background too. this chair isnt going to be that hard to make a cushion for, consider tailors and car reupholsterers if you cant find a reasonable reupholstery place. I would be hesitant to order online, idk why.
you might be surprised how fast custom (even just cushions) adds up. i agree contacting tailors or seamstresses, maybe a custom curtain person even. and actual upholsterer might take the cushion request too seriously though it would be worth comparing prices. you can get the materials first yourself, foam (lots of densities and materials to choose from) and fabric from joanne's or michael's using their weekly coupons to help keep the price down. i often get great deals on fabric at second hand stores too. ikea is cheap if you like them. someone at joanne's could probably give you a yardage estimate.
the cushions wouldnt need to be in any special shape -- seems like its a basic square/rectangle -- I personally thing $240 is way too much but that's just my humble opinion.
Are you heart set on the linen fabric? If not, there are a lot of options out there for indoor/outdoor cushions and they come in tons of Sunbrella fabrics.
I did a Google search and this was one of the first results: http://www.cushionsource.com/buy-chair-cushions.php
You can provide them with your own fabric, and their charge for my approximation of your size cushions came to $115.00 (PLUS the cost of the material you provide- I imagine three yards at $12 a yard at least)
I doubt you'll do better than $200 total for custom made cushions.
You can try Ruben Studio which is a 5 minute bus right across the river in Union City, NJ and have a fabulous Cuban lunch right next door to his shop. You can see his work at http://rubenstudio.com/
I think $240 is also way too much for cushions that are square. If you don't want to trek to Jersey, have you checked out any shops in the Chinatown area?
I would not buy on line. Take the chair to a good upholsterer locally. There should be tons of them in NYC. I'm in Chicago and they are all over here. True its not cheap to get custom work done but there is more a chance they will get it right rather than on line which could be an expensive mistake.
I bought a historic home with a big front porch that had a swing and old wicker furniture. I painted everything black and ordered custom cushions (black/white stripe) from customcushions.net. I was very pleased with the quality and the cost. I also used them for bench cushions and window seat cushions for indoors. They are a great source.
I have this chair too! LOVE it and it now lives with us at the beach. I made the cushion covers as they are perfect rectangles; I used 5" foam and a tan/gold/black sort of zebra upholstery fabric and the chair looks fab. You must have a friend who sews and would do it for you in exchange for a favor from you. Seriously, it took me only a couple of hours.
I bought glider cushions from from Home Decorator's Outlet. They have a nice size and fabric selection, very reasonable.
I wouldn't buy online, not just because of price. This doesn't look like a run of the mill chair with easy dimensions to shape for, so I don't think a cushion would fit just right.
Always, always get a second opinion before you do anything. Tell your wife to hold her horses and be patient.
Sweet chair... just a thought, but we used an Etsy seamstress for several custom projects that were impeccably done and cost way less than some B&M tailors. We sent her the dimensions and ordered the fabric ourselves, just had it delivered to her. She billed us for the labor only. One of the projects was cushions for a window seat. If you can find your own cushion forms, you could order custom covers in the same way for far less than $240.

We used fabric.com to order fabric. Good luck!
Links didn't work, so... here's her shop:

Bring it to a tailor in the LES or Chinatown. Anywhere else and you're going to get an inflated price. (Using pants hemming as an example, LES - $5 vs Chelsea - $23)
I've personally used Nelson Tailor Shop on 170 Rivington St - but along the walk there you'll pass about 10 other tailors.
You might find a good independent upholsterer by asking around at furniture stores. Too bad phone books are out of style. The yellow pages should have several.
I just received my custom bistro chair cushions from www.cushionsxpress.com, and it cost me about $70 including shipping for two seats and two backs, made to my exact chair size, with my choice of firmness and density, wrapped in dacron for softness, and covered with Sunbrella fabric, with the zipper and the little ties exactly where I specified. They're perfect and I love them.
I only wish I had requested samples of the fabric (which they offer for free, but I didn't want to bother with taking the time for), because the online colors don't exactly look like the real deal. That was my mistake, though, not theirs.
My mom made me custom couch cushions after the originals were destroyed. It was not a standard size. She used this company in Rochester NY. she brought the cover she had made right to them and they filled it on the spot. Very friendly.

I also live in NYC and have stuff reupholstered or slip covered all the time. Depending on the kind of linen & kind of fill, $240 is a fairly average (if not somewhat reasonable cost) price. For your info on doing custom fabric work, here is the logistical breakdown: upholstery foam ranges from $20-60 per yard depending on quality and density; batting or dacron anywhere from $1- 10 per yard depending on quality; the biggest raw item cost is of course the linen, which for upholstery grade generally starts at $30/ yard and goes up; you might find your own at a garment district place (there is one on 37th street that specializes in linen) for as low as $18/ yard, but anything less than that may be too thin for the wear & tear of your particular usage (ie, would work for a shirt, but not for something where the seams have stress, like a chair). For a chair such as your's, you'd probably need to buy about 4 yards. (This may sound high, but bear mind mind that when you buy a woven like linen, your seamstress may need to match the weave at the seams, meaning that they must cut the cloth).
When you do the math, you find that your chair cushions in cost alone IN NYC actually costs about $100-150 BEFORE labor. So with someone who does just one small job for you (ie, where they are not obtaining discounts on the materials due to bulk), you'll be paying a lot.
I've had good experiences with people on craigslist, and work with one individual in particular. let me know if you want those details or if you decide to go the online route.
Heidi, I used to live on Norfolk & Rivington back in the early 80's heyday and I'm glad to hear it still has old school tailors. I hope the pickle shops are still around!
Many people don't realize the reason foam is so expensive is because it's a petroleum product. Gas expensive? So is foam.
How about checking out Pier I? (Or maybe Home Goods?) They usually have in-stock cushions meant for their chairs that might work ok for yours.
First, the response...WOW. That so many people care about my chair is just...well, tears ladies and germs. Tears.
Long story short, my wife and I went with cushionsource.com. The initially high quote was b/c we thought we needed a custom size (and $$$fabric), but after receiving our template, they called to say custom wasn't necessary. They took off the extra charge, so all together, it's gonna be about $150, which on a $20 chair is O-Tay. As much as I wanted to go local, at least these are still made in America. Thanks again Apt.Therapy for the help!
Agree with an earlier post, Cushion Source is great. From their customer service to their end product, they have a turn-key solution that I have used for over four years now for my clients. Some of their styles are priced higher than their online competitors but they make it up with the quality you get! I have used a few others and will be glad to report on them if someone asks. Take care
