Q: I live in New York City and I am looking for a large blue and white ceramic planter for my apartment. I have found few very expensive antique ones along 26th Street; $900 and up. I'm looking for the $50 version. Any suggestions on where to find one?

chinatown...super duper cheap
Kam Man Foods on Canal. (or other Chinatown shops)
Pearl River Trading in SoHo - but likely to be more expensive than Chinatown.
Good Luck!
Target has a cute line of blue and white stuff right now. Not sure what they have in terms of planters, though.
EBAY
ETSY
Chinatown.
Chinatown.
untrussedgourmet is right on: chinatown and Pearl River in SOHO for sure -a quick walk between them.
Try Pier 1 Imports. They often carry similar pieces in blue/white.
Craigslist?
Definitely Chinatown. If you're actually going to plant something in a container that large, do a little research on setting up a false bottom so you aren't trying to move 50lbs of dirt in a 20lb planter.
@mjs7640 - You can add packing peanuts or bits of styrofoam to the bottom to raise it. If you want, then add a layer of landscape fabric so the soil doesn't mix with the styrofoam. Just make sure the plant is not too top heavy. Casters are another option....

Pearl River in SoHo.
I don't even live in NY-sigh-, and I knew the answer to this one! (as mentioned, Chinatown).
Chinatown ... however, if you want to go super cheap and inauthentic and sometimes leave the city to far away places that have discount stores like ross, those often have versions for under $20
On Mulberry near Bayard in Chinatown on the east side of the street really close to Bayard. You'll find an amazing array of Chinese style planters at amazing prices.
Daffy's...yup!
Marshalls in Chelsea.. I was just visiting their store and saw many beautiful pieces.
Thrift stores in Chinese neighborhoods. I see them all the time in SF.
If you purchase a new one you can scuff it up a bit, then soak in a tub of strong tea to get that antique look.
Wisteria has two (however they may not be as open at the top). Both are $34: http://www.wisteria.com/Longevity-Porcelain-Pot-New/productinfo/W5491/
There's a little pottery shop on Mulberry between Canal and Bayard Street (just north of Columbus park) where I have seen similar stuff. Kam Man market is awesome, but I've gotten smaller items there and haven't seen many larger vases, etc.
Ten Thousand Villages is more expensive than some of the options others have discussed, but still within your budget
If you are really going to put a plant in it, I would make sure it has a drainage hole, which most fish pots do not. If there isn't a hole, put the plant in a different container & then put it inside the pot.
I agree with ktruelove with the little pottery shops on Mulberry between Canal and Bayard St. And stay away from SOHO pearl shop, it's expensive and isn't worth it.
