Q: I have been searching for ages for a cord kit for suspending a single light from a ceiling without having to hardwire anything. I see plain white cords online, but never any colored options that aren't special-ordered for hundreds of dollars. Any suggestions as to where I could find these?

Put it together yourself through grandbrass.com.
You can choose the color cord, type of socket, a socket cup if you want one, and the color canopy. It's really easy and fairly inexpensive.
What if you were to wrap it in colored string? It would mean a lot of wrapping depending on the length of your cord, but you could do some pretty cool things I think
We got one with a black cord at West Elm for like $20. I second the warping it in string That could look pretty cool.
Camp Design Group makes great ones for 50 dollars:

Daniel at Manhattan Nest orders it from http://www.sundialwire.com/. I have not yet, but I have been keeping it in the back of my mind for a future project.
I have wanted this option for a long time. Some entreprenurial spirit out there should pick this up and run with it. I bet the public would bit.
World Market has 15' cloth covered cords with inline switches for $12.99 back with there pendant lighting. They had white and 3 other colors last I saw.
Socket.

The west elm one is covered in a type of fabric. you could probably paint it
Paint. And if you needed high neat paint; that'd be one dangerous cord.
You can dye electrical cord any color you want.

You can buy cord, sockets, and plugs from this source.
Alternatively, you could buy macrame cord and cover the lamp cord in a series of square knots.
Or you can paint. For that sort of application, I'd recommend roughing the cord a little bit with sandpaper (don't go crazy) and brushing on puff paint which comes in loads of colors.
Not sure if this qualifies as inexpensive but Etsy has a number of great sellers. Here is my favorite:

Kind of random, but Land of Nod has a bunch of these in their lighting offerings: http://www.landofnod.com/kids-ceiling-fixtures/kids-room-decor/1.
I got one at IKEA. I don't know if they sell them anymore.
These guys are around $40 BUT they are cloth cords, lots of colors and you can also choose the metal finish for the hardware: http://shandells.bigcartel.com/
The World Market ones that someone previously posted about are nice. I got the black/white combo, but they also come in colors. Available online and in stores.
I work at the BoConcept store in Houston, and we have many of the past season Lotus lamps at 40% off. They were $119 but are 40% off ans include an Edison bulb. They have really nice fabric cords in orange, blue, red, or black and red. Ceramic socket. 713-877-1900.
I got one from World Effect for $20 and love it. They have lots of colors to choose from.

The Best Made Company has cool offerings.
I was going to suggest dyeing them as well.
I got a bright, lime green one at IKEA in Canada last year - I think it was less than $10.
sharpie. paint pen. electrical tape. cheap solutions. lots of nicer ones above
i purchased ikea hemma cords online, then wrapped them in neon duct tape - took a while (i ran the tape lengthwise down the cord, rather than twirling it around, so it wouldn't have wrinkles), but they look great!
I accidentally spilled latex paint onto the cord of my fan when I was painting a room. The paint has held up well, 4 years later. Pretty sure you can just paint a white cord any colour you like.
Hello Everyone! We originally offered these pendant cords to go with our fair trade lamp shades at WorldEffect.com. Do to the popularity of these cord sets, we are launching a new website, ColorCord.com in early February offering Pendant Light Cords in 16 colors, as well as bulk cord by the foot for all you DIYers. Stay tuned!

World Market has a turquoise blue one for $12.99. It's not cloth covered like a lot of the other ones people have mentioned. Just blue cord.
Yes! This is what I was going to post! I have two 15' red ones from World Market, just like the picture from this post. They're great + they're on sale all the time.

I would love to know which ikea you found this cord in many colors at. I have some from a few years ago but now only find black and white in the stores.
