Q: I am looking for a modern entertainment unit but don’t want to break the bank. Most of the ones I have seen are $4k and upwards. Is there anything in the $1-$2k range that still looks nice?

Hi Jen. I searched for 2 years to find my modern TV stand, same budget & criteria. I ended up buying from Dania Furniture -- also known as "Scandanavian Designs" in some parts of the country. Both have websites of the same name. Great quality, made in either Italy/Romania/China. Exactly fits your budget.
I would also suggest Overstock.com. They have great TV stands if you like the low, modern look. Some units are heavy, and require assembly (can take a whole Saturday!), so be warned.
Finally, I also like BDI products. They have a couple of lines of TV stands (Avion, Marina) that are modern, functional, and bold. You can find them on eBay, CL, etc.
I hope that helps!
I agree with Ikea. I purchased the 3 of the besta shelves and mounted them to the wall for a floating look. It turned out better than expected.
CB2 Chill Media Console - looks great - way under your price range. Drawers hold a lot, shelves good for yoru cable box, DVD player (thinks that need to be open to a remote).
Ikea all the way
Yeah, the ikea Besta line can more or less replicate any "euro" style entertainment center: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S89895326
Even the most complex besta until will come well within your budget.
Check out the Kimora Ent Console from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. It is 20% off right now until May 8th...
I have the Ikea Expedit one... much like many others. But you can mix it up if you want the more traditional look from Ikea anyway.
Coffee table for the TV stand (they hold way more than they say they do!), some Expedit shelves around it (the 4x2 box ones might work) or even some of the Lack shelves that install right into the wall. It would be simple, but classy.
Ikea furniture, I've discovered, will last forever if it's not moved around or beaten up too much. Our coffee table held our old tube TV (100+ lbs) for a long time. I'd recommend that as a starting piece any day.
Another option would be to do a really cool credenza instead of something specifically made as a media console.
That piece is available at

In Los Angeles and is only $1295
Room and Board. Plus, most of it is made in America.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I originally purchased the unit in the photo from Alf but decided against it, because the wall I wanted to put it against was 10ft and the unit would look too small. I spent some more time perusing Ikea and other stores and this is what I have found: Alf/ Rossetto / Natuzzi modular pieces are nice but would be >$4k for all the pieces. The Ikea Besta line is great, however, I am looking for glossy white and they only have glossy white doors, not bases. I have found a brand in between price ranges, Lorenzo Campanelli, which has nice modular sets for under $2k with glossy white and nice walnut options. I’ll try to post a pic once I finally get the pieces.
