Q: I am about to paint my new apartment and I love the dining room color from the NY Times design magazine from last weekend featured in the Georgian Manor house (Dinder House). I love the brown/grey/purple of it. Can you help me pick a perfect one for a room that is both West and South facing?

Shaw's Original Fir...
?"Willow Creek " by Benjamin Moore. I have it in my bedroom and I love love love the color!!
My great room and entry hall have a similar feel and I used a color I made from 2 Ben Moore colors; between trout gray 2124-20 and deep silver 2124- 30. I think it turned out fabulous. Let me know what you think!
The picture immediately made me think of the Behr color "Porpoise," one I used in my last apartment and loved. Perfect purple/gray moodiness. Good luck finding your match!
Maybe something close to an Elephant Grey by California Paint
"backdrop" by Sherwin Williams is a lot like the color in the photo. I have it in my dining rm and love it.
As you can tell from the variety of responses, it is almost impossible to translate a color based on how a picture looks on a computer or smartphone monitor or in a magazine. The only possible right answer is, "Your guess is as good as mine. Get some samples and try them in your space."
We just painted our bedroom a similar (if not the same) color... BM Chelsea Gray. We also painted our bathroom BM Iron Mountains, which has a slight purple undertone to the gray. Both of these rooms are west/south facing and the light mixed with the paint provides a really cozy atmosphere. Good luck!
I agree with quiltmaster, however I just helped my mother in law paint her living room (with a similar look as the photo above) in BM's Chelsea Gray (good call mrsadams09!)
Chelsea Gray has a great combo of warm and cool tones, with the perfect purple tint to it. Obviously it depends on the lighting but in this case, we were pleasantly surprised at how good it looked in different parts of the room.
"Silver Chiffon"by Ralph Lauren is a great lavender based grey that changes all day long with different lighting.
It looks the way Behr squirrel looks in my partner's family room.
We bought American Tradition's Earl Grey and put it in our living room. During the day it looked dark gray, like in the picture and in some light at night it looked brown. Many people called it "river rock," and was spectacular in every light. It shifted and changed all the time. Lovely. The trick is the BRIGHT white trim (which look we also did).
