It isn't easy to find a kitchen or dining room table that is both beautiful and well-suited for your space and needs. Thank goodness for the growing cottage industry of artisans who make hand-crafted and customized tables from salvaged or reclaimed wood.
The solid wood planks are often recycled from flooring or roof joists of old buildings. They can be rough hewn for a rustic country look or smooth sanded for a more contemporary or modern look. Some of these companies also offer waxed, stained or painted finishes. One benefit of reclaimed wood is the natural patina and blemishes that occur through age and exposure to the elements, which give the tables a unique character and charm. They are durable and built to withstand even the most high-energy chef (or toddler). Whether trestle, parsons, or farmhouse style, most of these tables would be equally at home in a modern home as a more traditional one.

Check out http://heartsart.us/ if you're in Florida! Shawn O'Malley makes gorgeous tables using local salvage. It is my dream to one day have a tapered leg cypress dining table!
we built one ourselves that looks a lot like #9 using plans from Ana White. We modified them to make it wider so it would fit our space and we could set travertine tiles in the center to act as trivets. We also did a dark stain and paste wax finish.
Admittedly, we didn't try to source reclaimed wood, but it will just have to develop our family's patina.

Love, love, LOVE Scott's Rustic Furniture! We bought a dining room table with a bench from him. Not only is it beautiful, but we absolutely love the fact that it's made out of solid wood, not veneers. And he's great to work with!
