Name: Jordan
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Size: 412 sq. ft. apartment
Rent/Own: Rent
What is the advantage of SMALL? Efficiency. My apartment back in New York was so small, I could watch TV, do some light typing, make breakfast, and answer the door all from the comfort of my toilet.

What's your favorite resource for your home?
The dumpster. Although, saying it like that makes me sound like some roving lunatic. Whatever. One man's trash is another man's modern living solution.
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?
I suppose it would be more respectable to say the cleverly-planned closet-cum-bedroom, but.. I'm a guy. It's the 106-inch [movie] screen, obviously.

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
I really dig this place. I especially enjoyed the funny description. The movie screen is AWESOME.
i love the floorplan drawings!!!
Great place - love the movie screen and the description!
I've given very few super cools, but this got my vote. I even sort of like the art above doorways, and I'm not usually a fan of that.
Delightful and thank you for showing us all of it! Got super cool from me.
such a GREAT use of your space! and truely a small space under 500 sq ft
is your bed in a (used-to-be) closet?
the schematic of your apt. is very helpful. nice job, but don't you worry about those pieces above your doorway crashing down in an earthquake? though come to think of it, so will everything else so i guess it doesn't matter. i lived through the last one and crunched on broken jars of honey, beans and cereal in my kitchen for quite some time!
I'm okay with it, but then I read the owner's comments of this place, I liked it more. It is definitely a very functional place in such a small space, however, rather than other contestant's "living big", I felt very constrained especially by bedroom, I almost felt that I couldn't breathe. The other area showed a lot of creativity and I'm sure you are capable to do it better in the bedroom. I voted "cool" for those credits.
Hi Jordan - What do you use for closet space since the main closet is now the bedroom?
best floor plan so far!
I love that you put an afghan on your cool couch! very cool. . .
I'm not crazy about the office and dining spaces being switched. Although I suppose the natural light in the kitchen is the reason. Also, please find a way to mount the projector...ceiling, wall, post, something.
I love the bed in the closet because then its not the focus of your living space. Also, like the art hung with clips in the dining area and the nude in the living room. Normally, I like some color in the bathroom but I like that the shower curtain lets the natural light in.
The floor plan drawings show a shelf behind the couch and a chair that I don't see in the photos....great drawings though, very helpful.
Is it me, or do all of these houses look the same? Can we get something other than danish-modern-eclectic on this site?
Excellent use of space--and nice choice of movie too... This got one of my very few 'super-cools' for it's laid back ingenuity.
love love love the bed nooks :)
THIS is what small and cool is all about.
Nice place, nice photos, funny description, best floorplan.
Now THIS is what defines supercool!
I love your place, all of it. Nice use of space. Awesome bed alcove and cool drawings!!
Great place! Such a great use of space! And I laughed reading the description - are those Beck and Thom Yorke?
Tiny, but amazing!! It makes me not so nervous about potentially moving into a tiny LA apartment myself.
The closet-bedroom and kitchen-office are my favorites.
Great place and a great sense of humor to go with it!
you win for best descriptions!
this is great! where do u put ur clothes?
oh and could u tell me the source of ur coffee table? me likes.
I love this space. Totally cool and unpretentious. I love your life drawings and the creativity which shows in your use of space - you've maximized it without cluttering it. WOW.
Your descriptions are humorous and honest... just like your space.
Actually small, and actually cool. Love the fact that you committed to all white (or could you just not paint?...). You really seemed to work with the blank canvas to great advantage. Nice place!
even ur grandma crochet blanket doesn't take away from the place. if put that on my sofa it would never work!
and the 'best pitch' winner is...
love the apartment. not so fond of these spreads on the sofa and chair. bedroom is beautiful. got my super-cool vote.
This is cool, though it looks the same as many of the other places in the contest- I know that's not fair, as this being alater entry is bound to get that type of comment! Very good use of space, love the screen and such a cutely drawn floor plan!
All around good use of space and (I ditto) best comments. Agree about mounting the projector, since I imagine sitting anyone on the couch makes it like watching MST3000 with the heads shadowed.
Now that's a closet/bedroom that I could sleep in.
Not a fan of dumpster decorating but your place looks "okay."
Very amusing comments.
Is that THE THIRD MAN?
Weasel Dearest is Mr. Dangerous
Very small and very cool.
super fantastic. and is that booze on the heater/AC unit?
Great photo choices.
Great use of space.
Great, clean personal style.
Great floor plan.
Nice masculine feel to it.
Super cool.
I'm getting SICK of all the Eames chairs in peoples homes. Putting one in your home does not make it all-of-a-sudden chic. Seriously, get some creatitivity, people!
I have to agree with Elizabet...This is great. I love your use of space and how uncluttered it is. It actually looks like you live here...I love it!
I think the office and dining area should swap, in my opinion anyways.
Nevis - if you knew anything about design you'd know WHY everyone has the chairs in their homes. THey're freaking GREAT chairs.
So much fun! And i love the butt drawing cropped out in the first picture! Super duper cool!
Wow, what a response. Thanks to everyone.
This will actually my first post on AT ever. To answer a few questions so far:
JenJen -- RE: Bedroom/Closet -- Yes. My [so not a] bedroom was originally a walk-in closet.
BB -- RE: Picture Ledges/Earthquake -- I'm not too worried. The picture ledges hang *over* the doorways and, as we all know, the safest place to be during an earthquake is *inside* a doorway.
Bumblebeechicago -- RE: Storage -- There is a second, smaller closet off the front door where I put my stuff. Though it is not a junkpile, it will definitely not be photographed.
Jen_G -- RE: Blanket over couch -- Thank you! My Great Grandmother quilted the afghan/blanket and the throw on my Eames lounger is from my other great grandmother. Both are hiding the very poor condition of the furniture underneath them.
Enamoranda -- RE: Floor Plan -- I apologize. I should have clarified that the bottom image was my 'concept drawing' and the top drawing is the actual, this-is-how-the-place-turned-out floor plan.
La Loca -- RE: Is that Beck and Thom Yorke? -- Yes, along with many other personal literary, musical, and artistic heroes.
SD913 -- RE: Where are your clothes? -- There's a built-in armoire/vanity table next to the bed (unpictured) that came with the apartment.
SD913 -- RE: Coffee table -- This is actually one of those 20 dollar Ikea coffee tables. I painted it white, then cut a piece of wood panelling to size and liquid-nailed it to the top.
Aneta -- Thank you, that's exactly what I was going for -- Unpretentious. I felt I had achieved this when my poker buddies looked up from their Budweisers and said, "Dude. I really like your apartment."
Kellylj -- RE: All white -- Painting the walls is against my lease and I definitely need my deposit back.
Elizabeth II/Enamorada -- There's a ceiling fan that prevents mounting the projector, but I do agree with you and am planning an alternate solution. And no, it does not produce MST3K silhouettes -- I cracked up at that.
Weasel Dearest -- RE: Is that The Third Man? -- Yes, but, who is The Third Man?
Brookejoy -- RE: Is that booze on the heater/ac? -- Yes. Yes it is.
Once again, thanks to all who voted.
-Jordan
Modfan, geez, take a chill pill. I didn't say they WEREN'T nice chairs - just commenting on the fact that I wouldn't want something that everyone else has.
If my apartment had a boyfriend, this apartment would be him.
Supercool.
Jordan, that is awesome to have those photographs of your creative heroes close by!
I voted Super Cool just for the gorgeous, hand-crocheted afghan on the sofa. Okay, not really, but I do love crocheted afghans.
This place has a comfortable, clean look. I like the wood floors and simple white walls. I don't think the bed looks too cramped...it's cozy.
My brother's house (built in the 1920's) has the exact same bathroom floor as yours. Nice and neutral, but not like everybody else's.
jordan ur great! thanks for taking the time to reply. i would never have thought that the coffee table was an Ikea hack.
I do love the little shelf over the doorway.
I want to marry your home!
Can i send you pictures of all my shit and you can tell me how to fix it?
Love the projector, especially the placement OVER the windows. Love the use of the wall mount on your vintage fan. I got so many ideas from your space.
I'm calling it modern masculine and its fantastic!
Hi Jordan! Great place! I have the same bathroom tiles as you. How do you keep them clean? No matter how hard I try they still look dingy. It makes me nuts. Any tips? Thanks!
I voted supercool by the way!
I have a crush on this place too. Lots of great ideas to steal, such as the shelves for artwork over the doorways. I just wish I had space for a 106-inch movie screen! (Sigh.) Supercool for me.
"One man's trash is another man's modern living solution." AMEN TO THAT! Excellent use of space! Super Cool!
Thank goodness for an answer other than "a small apartment forces you to edit . . ."
Great place! But where do you store all your clothing is your bed takes up the closet? I keep trying to find a dresser or a wardrobe for folded/hanging clothing in the pictures!
The projector gets a "super cool" from me! Love it!
what projector do you use?
LOVE IT. This and Yiming's entry are my favorites so far. Both of those entries show a real personality. This is an insta-finalist for sure!
I also wonder about a wardrobe/closet. Where is it?
Really loving the idea of shelves over the doorway. Objects up there can be discreetly secured with a little bit of glue-tack-y stuff on the back..
You had me at the first pic. This apt. is fan-TAST-ic!
Extra cool for dumpster divers and the big screen movies. arty, clean and cohesive
How homosexually perfect.
Walter...go away.
Snark somewhere else...
I want to live here.
This place is awesome. The super sized screen and projector in a small space really make this one special. Who would have thought...Bed in a closet? You should consider doing this professionally to utilize your creative talent.
I'm in love.
Clever, functional, personal....amazing.
I love the artwork above the doorways, your little work station and the brown blanket over the bedspread (looks textured- what is that?) Very cool space!
what wonderful use of space! if i had a boyfriend, i certainly wish his pad was like yours!
Movie night at Jordan's!! Oh wait, I don't live in LA. Crap.
Your apt. looks like a great place to hang out, and you've really used the space well. Also, awesome title! Good choice of inspiration.
The floor plan is fantastic!
i voted super cool - i think my first this year. i see lots of great space saving ideas - from your projector to the multiple use of space over the doors. it looks lived - nice. and i like that you've used the full height of your walls to hang your pics. nicely done.
and the floor plan is fab.
I think I just bought that couch from Urban Outfitters (which i know is about the furniture equivalent to buying clothes at forever 21) and that afghan on there is making me nervous. I haven't assembled it yet, does it suck?
I really like this! I like how it feels indulgent even in a small space. Big bed in a closet. A full size desk next to the kitchen makes an office area that blends well with the kitchen, especially the stainless steel (?) of the desk blends with the steel accents in the kitchen. Love the whiteboard, good for office, good for kitchen. And love the huge projector screen, again very indulgent in the small space, and unlike a big flat screen, you can put it away. I think this should be a finalist.
this apartment makes me have a crush on you.
I think you're in love with JORDAN, not his apartment...I don't see any great design here...Just some 20 something's temporary abode...making an alter out of your television qualifies as Great Design? The projector is sitting on the table, folks! If that's Wild Turkey, Jack Daniels and Johnny Walker Red on that heater, then Jordan should be spanked and put to bed without his supper for ruining good alcohol. Obviously he doesn't deserve to drink the good stuff yet if he treats it like that. That bathroom couldn't be blander, and the kitchen has no personality at all...You've all gone mad, hoping for a date with Jordan, because he sounds like a charming badboy...Just what every girl (and gay man) wants.
You know what Jordan, this is all just a little popularity contest, so you may just win--But don't give up your day job to start designing Just Yet.
This is very homey and classy at the same time. The artwork is nicely set up, and looks great over the doorways. The home office is awesome-looking. I don't care for the throw over the sofa or the lounger, but other than that, I think it's super.
I agree withvoodoochild. look at all the comments: "if my apartment had a boyfriend, this apartment would be him."
"jordan ur great! thanks for taking the time to reply"
"I want to marry your home!"
"I have a crush on this place too."
"I'm in love."
"if i had a boyfriend, i certainly wish his pad was like yours!"
"Movie night at Jordan's!! Oh wait, I don't live in LA. Crap."
"this apartment makes me have a crush on you."
"Who would have thought...Bed in a closet? You should consider doing this professionally to utilize your creative talent" OH BROTHER how many other beds in closeets have we seen ion this contest? didn't get this reaction when you weren't thinking about shring it with jordan! hahahahahahaha
beautiful. Thank you so much for entering.
the trick of creating chaos and then seizing power under the pretense of putting things back in order is a tried and true method of deception and manipulation. It's the meaning behind the Latin motto: ORDO AB CHAO meaning ORDER OUT OF CHAOS.
very clever
Comfortable, masculine and non pretentious. Personally I thought your design elements were great.
This is the first entry that I voted "super cool" and I did that because you have managed to turn a really odd apartment into what looks like a comfortable place to live!! I love that sofa. I love furniture upholstered in masculine fabrics. I would arrange the art and a few small pieces differently and I would give that throw over the back of the sofa another home. Overall the place is very nice.
Great job!!
P.S. Love the coffee table too.
Voodoo Child -- The guy is in LA, I think it's ok that his alcohol is on the heater. How often could he possibly have to use it in LA?! I'm sure he'd move the alcohol for the week that he would need to turn the heater on.
maybe true in summer, but winter you neeeda furnnace or a fur coat--and fur coats aren't allowed in city of angels.
small-yes
cool-no
Hello again. Thank you for all the positive responses. Just to answer a few more questions:
Jenna -- RE: What projector do you use? -- It's an Epson Moviemate 30s. I got it refurbished from Epson.com for a very, very good price.
DahliaCactus -- RE: Send pictures? -- I'd be honored to look at photos of 'all your shit'. Send away.
HarmonyFrance -- RE: Any tips for keeping the bathroom from looking dingy? -- Mine is a bit scuzzy, too. One tip: Take wide photos.
KidMoe -- RE: Wardrobe location? -- There is a built-in wardrobe/vanity between the bed and the bathroom door, but it is not visible in the photos.
Nicolewis -- RE: Couch from Urban Outfitters? -- Actually this is a used sofa bed from Craigslist. Good luck with the UO sofa though, let us know how it is. I'm curious about their quality, myself.
And lastly, my dear friend VoodooChild, the radiator is completely broken. The booze is quite safe.
Have a drink, bud.
Once again, thanks to all who voted for me. I truly appreciate it and have been *floored* by the response. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
the place looks kind of messy--I don't understand all the supercool votes?
who is this guy, Bart Simpson?
and personally I think having a latin phrase as your tag line is completely pretentious.
LOVE the bed loft
so cool i actually took the time to log in and vote. now THAT'S saying something. rock on with your bad self Jordan.
I think projectors are the best things ever and I was especially thrilled to see the big dry erase board in your kitchen. I am just nerdy and think dry erase boards are awesome.
Good job with what you did with your space. I think that is the brightest, whitest kitchen I have seen yet.
Love this one in the 'rental apartment category' (wishlist) - minimal intervention with great impact - comes across as so much more than decorating and furniture arrangement.
Love your space and use of everything ecletic that you have. It all seems to work well together. But the best part I like is that it looks LIVED IN and REAL, not out of a design catalogue like a lot of the other entries. And your comments are hilarious. Totally voted 'Super Cool' for you.
I love this. Why are people so mean in this contest. with 4oo sq. ft. you are limited and it looks damn good.
I want your couch.
Thanks for the response! Well it could very well be the couch from UO then because mine is a sofa bed too. I got it online for $510 dollars and it looks just like that. Oh wait i'll just post a link:

I still haven't assembled it b/c I'm moving to San Clemente in 2 weeks! Hooray!
Really great floorplan drawings!
Love the way the bed fits perfecty in the tiny room!
love this place! boo for the haters. stylish, small, and very nicely pulled together. I'm up for poker!
your pad is fantastic. the doorway art is my fave. how many of those are originals??!! a super cool from me, for sure!
miss you in NC.
I love everything about this apartment. The bednook is cozy. I like how the desk is at the end of the kitchen. The whole layout and decor is fabulous. Super cool!
Envy is not nice!
I am indeed in love with the apartment and Jordan and gave him super cool for it. He had me with the pink afghan. Totally adorable. It's the kind of place you want to move into because it doesn't look like it's straight out of a magazine but is still put together. Great job!
It's not necessarily envy that motivates the negative comments--It's the perception that an entry is getting votes for some other reason than good design.
Although I think Jordan's place looks comfortable, and definitely somewhere I would like to hang out and watch a movie and drink a beer (or three), I don't think it is the best designed space--the art in livingroom and kitchen/work space is hung so high that you really can't appreciate it much, and I have to agree that the bathroom doesn't look like much has been done to it. It also kind of looks like a doormat on the floor? I think the apt. needs a rug to warm up the place, and (sorry Jordan's grandmo) that crocheted afghan has got to go.
The bedroom/closet idea (one we've seen before on this site) just doesn't appeal to me--too claustrophopic and Harry Potter-ish, and if the only clothes closet is on the other side of the apt., then it's not very practical.
Nice 3-D drawings, but a little confusing since some of the stuff drawn isn't in the apt.
Definitely not super cool, and not the best designed space I've seen by far--but nonetheless, it's a cool little hang.
Nada - nothing - there is nothing to this.
Nice, but I don't like how the bed's crammed in there.
