Q: I've got a bit of a project on my hands. I'm converting a downtown duplex into a single family home, and all was well until we ripped the mantle off an old fireplace to repair some flooring. It turns out the mortar was dust. EEP! The fireplace was the sole divider in the front room in the house, but it was too deteriorated for repairs.
It has been removed and I'm deciding whether to replace it. So my question is this: What would you do with a 30' wide by 15' deep room where the front room is in the middle of the 30' wall. Do I replace the fireplace (which will make the entrance feel a bit cramped) or something else (be creative!)? There are windows flanking the door on either side and a side window on each side. The back right of the room has a french door which opens into the dining area & kitchen.
