One of the challenges of a small bathroom is where to stock all the essentials — extra toilet paper, beauty items and the like. An over the toilet storage tower or etagere is a great solution for cramped bathrooms. The space above the toilet is just sitting there unused anyway – why not make use of it?

As nice as those storage towers are,I really don't like using the over the toilet storage towers. I choose to stack two small glass front cabinets over the toilet in my small guest bathroom. It works great for storing bath items ,but not for bath linens,so those are stored in a small linen closet next to the bathroom.
I know it's probably not very logical, but over-the-toilet storage just squicks me out. My bathroom came with zero storage whatsoever, so we pressed a 16-inch-wide Billy bookshelf with a glass door into use. I mounted some fabric behind the glass for color and privacy. Tons of storage and after four years in the bathroom use the cabinet doesn't look any worse for wear.
I don't love them either, but the bathroom in our rental in Manhattan has subway-tile walls. Since we rent, we can't screw anything into the tile, so hanging cabinets is out, and we don't have any extra floor space for a shelving unit. The only storage is a shallow medicine cabinet. We really have no other option if we want to store anything other than toiletries.
That first bamboo one looks VERY similar to the Molger from Ikea, which is only $59.99 (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90241420/#/90241420)
I have it and it's one of their nicer real wood pieces. It's very sturdy and attractively warms up my cool bathroom.
sweet jesus i needed this post
Ugh, for whatever reason I just detest these things although admittedly the ones you show here are much more attractive than the usual suspects. I just think when a bathroom is already small, cramming it full of storage units makes it feel really cramped and messy.
Sometimes one has to compromise because function overrides decor, but I hate them. They loom over room. Plus, most of them are open storage which is nearly always messy in bathrooms.
There was one in a bathroom when we moved into our house. I got rid of it and I have a small cabinet that tucks into the side of the pedestal sink. It's not perfect, but I like it much better.
I also say ugh. It's hard enough to clean around and behind the toilet. Plus these all add too much visual clutter and are mostly just plain ugly. And I couldn't get one even if I wanted it because there's not enough room between the toilet and sink! Try one of these instead. I have the fourth one on the list and it's very useful and looks nice, plus way less expensive.

I am not crazy about this type of bathroom storage. However, I may have to go this route. I bought a cabinet to hang on the wall above the toilet, only to find that there are no studs in that area of the wall which will support it. I am currently using wicker baskets on the floor to store my toiletries.
Of the above, I like options 3, 4, and 5 the most. I prefer storage with doors.
the thought of toilet spray getting all over these things just grosses me out.
*shudder*
Who has problems with "toilet spray"? Close the lid!
I installed floating shelves with enclosed boxes above the toilet in our main bathroom; it looks so much better! We have one of these in our 2nd, teeny-tiny bathroom though, and it stores a lot.
In case this is useful to anyone: I searched for a LONG time for some kid of basket that would fit the dimensions of our space saver shelves, and finally found it at West Elm:

I hate these so much. My mother has one, and I always feel like I have to "lean forward" while using the toilet.
Given the option, I wouldn't want to use one of these, but in a Manhattan apt with tiled walls there aren't many great other options. In the end, we found a great one with attractive doors. It's white like the rest of the cabinets and the tile so it recedes somewhat. I personally don't find that it interferes with any toilet activity and it is always nice to conceal all your toiletries so your bathroom appears neat and calm.
I usually hate these things but kind of like the first one on the second row. Cleaning around the base of the toilet in a small bathroom is bad enough without extra legs around the loo to further collect dust. In my currrent small bathroom I have floating shelves above the toilet that holds extra towels (plain white or grey), an extra bath soap and one extra roll. I have another floating shelf inside the bathroom above the doorway that holds extra rolls and some kleenex box stock.
When I had a small rental and I couldn't put anything up on the wall and no storage at all due to a pedastal sink, I put a tall but narrow wicker basket in the bathroom under the sink with extra rolls and a magazine. Cleaning supplies went into a hallway storage closet along with extra towels. If you live in a small space, it is easier to comingle storage in general areas as everything is still pretty close to where you need it.
I've never been a fan of these, but I may end up getting on board since I can't seem to find a roommate who uses less than 200 personal care products in the course of their morning routine. I am hitting my limit on makeup and hairspray littering every inch of one half of the vanity surface (though at this point I doubt more storage will actually fix the problem).
I've had this in two of my tiny rental bathrooms - the lower half is great for storing extra TP and cleaning materials, and the upper half with glass shelves is perfect for toiletries and small baskets.

It's tall, narrow and fits in almost anywhere!
I hate these as well and I was worried I would have to resort to using one, but there have been some great suggestions here for alternatives. Thanks!
The one from walmart is the best looking and least expensive. Go figure.
for a rental apartment it is a good solution, to have storage in an otherwise dead space. i myself have a cupboard over my toilet and makes excellent storage space!
BUT how am i going to put these up, if the drain goes into the wall or the cistern is included with the toilet-bowl itself (pic 1 and 6 for example). in my opinion someone should have put a little more though into this post. these would make a better storage space over a washing machine.
