I'm not really into cat furniture and if you live in a small home it's just impractical. My two cats have a scratching pad (and, a second scratching pad, aka the sofa) and sleep wherever they like, leaving their hair and dander behind in their wake.

I'm drawn to this new product, Cat Crib, which has small homeowners in mind. As you can see, the cradle attaches to chair legs with straps (nothing permanent) and will fit most chairs with enough clearance. Another plus - it's machine washable.
Cat Crib will be out later this summer ($29) but you can reserve yours now if you dig it.
[Editors note: this name of this product has been changed from "Kitty Cradle" to "Cat Crib" which is now reflected in this post]

I don't have a cat, so this is not something I'm really knowledgable about...but what would really be the difference between having the cat cradle and a cat lying on a blanket under the chair, or a cat bed tucked under the chair?
very cute, but i think i'd just lie on the chair if i was the cat!
@PI - cats love hammocks. I have no idea why. My little kitty likes to curl up in a blanket in your lap in the winter in what I like to call "crotch hammock". I sleep on my stomach and she will literally sleep in crotch hammock all night when it's cold out.
PI - cats like to have multiple different places to hang out and specifically, some cats like enclosed spaces and this is somewhat enclosed. I also think they like the "hammock" effect - I have a piece of cat furniture that "sags" like this product and one of my cats loves it. she also lays on a wool blanket that is on a high shelf but at night she seems to like the hammock-like spot.
Also, cats leave fur everywhere! if you can get them to sleep on their own furniture instead of the human furniture, you are less likely to stand up and have a bunch of fur stuck to your backside. :)
oh, and also, you and the cat can both use the chair this way - the most comfy chair in our place is always occupied by one of my other cats and she guards it obsessively.
It would be cool if this cat hammock looked more like chair underwear.
I will never look at this picture again without thinking it looks like "chair underwear."
This also makes it so much easier for Kitty to rip off the fabric on the underside of the chair!
It seems to me that cats always choose the most inconvienent places to sleep... if you make them their own bed, they will probably never touch it.
But, I'd probably buy one anyway.
It looks to me like it would slide down easily. Especially if you have a fat cat! :P I see the legs on this chair are splayed. I guess they would have to be for this to work?
@Duane Hill: Ha! I'd buy that.
As an added benefit, kitty has the opportunity to take playful swipes at unsuspecting people's ankles!
What cat would choose this over sitting on top of the chair?
@WELCOMEREALITY, Thank you so much for introducing the term crotch hammock to me. I kind of love it. Would make an excellent band name, no?
Probably depends on the cat. I was lucky enough that my cat fell madly in love with a padded folding chair. Besides her window blankets (one for morning and one for afternoon sun) she sleeps on the folding chair. At the threat of company, the chair can be folded up and stuck in a closet!
That would work perfectly under my computer table to corral all the cables.
My cat took matters into his own claws and fashioned a 'hammock' for himself by clawing through the fabric on the underside of my bed's boxsprings. I think he really liked both the darkness in there as well as the support offered by the sagging fabric. Yes, it got full of cat hair in there.
I guess it comes down to whether your cat is a nester or not. I have two. One would be totally all over that cozy hammock while the other would rather sprawl on the chair itself. However, we have a cat tree which caters to both and draws all the scratching away from the furniture.
@MIKEINKANSASCITY, the first time my cats did that it took me forever to find them. I was convinced they'd gotten out. Little furry bastards went thru that thing in no time at all.
Crotch Hammock and Dokken! I'd totally go to that show. :)
As for hammock-y places, I've been temporarily using a canvas director's chair at my desk. Last night Kitty #2 kept walking nearby, meowing impatiently. From where I sat, I could see food & water supplies were ok; and he's got a cat door to go outside, so I was flummoxed. Finally, I got up for a short moment and when I came back, he was in the chair's hammock-y seat. So thanks, this article and the great comments confirm what I suspected.
@MikeInKansasCity and @RachelMarie -- My cat does that too, and we also thought he had gotten loose somehow. When he's nestled in the box springs, we imagine him using Dr. Evil's voice to say "Welcome to my underground lairrrr."
@mikeinkansascity I have the same exact issue! Every. Single. Boxspring. Never fails haha. I had a cat condo that had a hammock on the bottom they never used, so I filled it with their cat toys.
I'm picturing my cat going up to that thing, sniffing it, then taking a nap on the floor right next to it.
My cat already has a bed. A number of them in fact -- most of them involve lying on blankets he shouldn't be on, piles of clean laundry, or anything he can jump up to snuggle in. The cubes with folded clothes in our closet is a favorite for him. So is the linen closet when he catches the door unlatched.
you know you can buy the cutest, most expensive, most smothered in cat nip cat bed out there, and your cat will still prefer to sleep in the damn box it was shipped in. Cat's love boxes, the less they actually fit in the box, the more they will try to get into it and sleep in it.
@WELCOMEREALITY, my cat totally sleeps in my "crotch hammock" too! I just never knew what to call it before. teehee.
Well it seems that I'm not the only one that has to deal with a cat and a boxspring. My neighbor's cat lived in my place before we moved in so he liked to visit, and he loved the sagging fabric at the bottom of my boxspring.
Cats are inscrutable. (I had the box-"spring" issue, too -- so I removed the underlining and discovered nary a spring to be seen, making that unit misnamed.)
Anyhow, I suspect my cats would love the hammock for a while. If I move my Room & Board Jake chair (Series 7 repro) into the middle of the room for my free-weight workout, suddenly it becomes irresistible, even though five feet away where it usually sits, it's totally to be ignored. Mika will sleep there until I take the chair away from her, and that one has a wooden seat, no padding!
There is no telling what they will go for. You can only know that they are out to mystify you!
yes - my cats love any 'hammock' type surface!!!
The boxspring syndrome! My littlest cat has tugged the ticking loose making just enough of a gap to creep into the underside of the bed in our guest room, cradled in a little ticking hammock. You can't reach her to get her out, and she knows it. She absolutely loves it in there. I've had a staple gun lying out on the dresser for a month, but can't find the heart to deny her this pleasure!
My two cats, rescues, love to be "enclosed", and right now the box spring is their favorite hide a way. Some cats are like that and would probably take to this hammock. I think it's a great idea.
SherryBinnh, your kitty wants to be near you and has no real interest in the chair. You should be proud of the trust.
As for the hammock, mine would sleep under it. Anyway, I like them sleeping next to me on the sofa or the bed.
@TARAINSEVENVALLEYS I noticed they posted a video in their YouTube account that shows the hammock installed on a coffee table with straight legs. They went onto put a 20 lb weight in it and it didn't slide down. Looks like the straps will hold. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skgyeIHGf-g&feature=plcp
The hammock design is not fancy but placement is crucial. I don't think I have ever seen a cat hanging under a chair. If you really want a hanging bed for your cat, you should check out the Cat's trapeze at
