Stewart Russell has been producing local, handmade and limited edition works from his Spacecraft studio in Melbourne, Australia, since 2000 and believes the connection between design and production should be one of the first environmental considerations designers make.
As Russell writes on his website:
'I am concerned the trend towards designing on one side of the world and producing on the other limits the designers understanding of the processes involved and ultimately their ability to take responsibility for the environmental impact their designs will have'
With this connection in mind Russell prints all his works in house, which limits runs but ensures that the designer is involved in every part of the production process.
Pigment printing is used to limit water consumption but water is still used to clean their screens so they are converting the studios water supply and the gardens to tank water.
