Sport Utility Bikes

If you are looking for a replacement for your gas-guzzling SUV, but still need to haul the occasional load, we've got the fix for you: a SUB. That's right—a sport utility bicycle.

These hot new models can carry 200 pounds or more, and they're designed for the challenge, with a longer wheelbase than usual. The LATimes compared four different models, and the most impressive to us is the $900 Yuba Mundo Cargo bike, which is designed to carry 440 pounds plus a rider. Also worthy of consideration is the $449 3-speed AfricaBike, shown above, which we like for its old-fashioned upright seating position and durable, sensible style—the cargo racks are actually welded on. But there's another reason to like it: for every two they sell, Kona donates one to home healthcare workers in Africa.
