Would you be daring enough to spray paint your silverware? What if you picked it up at the thrift store or a flea market for a ridiculously inexpensive price? No? Come on, just look how pretty it is!
We stopped in over at Sania Pell's corner of the internet to take a look at her oh so pretty painted silverware. She found it for a steal and is well aware that the paint will most likely scratch off. She's into the patina or worn look that might come from it and is perfectly ok with painting it again later, maybe even to go with a different color themed table.
This look is quick and easy and might be just the thing your dinner table needs if it's lacking a little punch. After all a few cans of spray paint is less expensive than buying all new table linens! Of course, you would only want to paint the handles of the silverware, keeping the paint off of the portion that will make contact with food or that you will put into your mouth.
You can check out more on this idea over at Sania Pell at Home.

Commercial Flour Sa...
Ew. No way.
yeah dude..ew
yeah, no thanks :/
Isn't it a bit earlier for the April Fool's posts?
:)
You're serious?
Um, no. It looks tacky, but it's also not safe. Just because you only spray the portion that you hold, doesn't mean it won't flake into your food. And if you put them into the dishwasher, you'll get paint chemicals in the water that will be sprayed onto other dishes and silverware. And even if you handwash them, the paint will still come off.
And even if you made them water proof or food safe, it still looks pretty tacky.
Hmmm...I'm not really liking this.
Only do this if you think the idea of eating spray paint chips appeals to you.
I don't care for the look of this either. If I was looking to do something sort of similar I might turn to Plasti-drip a la this blog: http://cubicle57.wordpress.com/2011/11/02/challenge-this-pinterest/ where she recreated mugs she saw on pinterest using Plasti Drip.
Still not sure about the food safety, and probably not dishwasher safe either.
Epic fail. I really want to puke just looking at it. Clearly, some people are not responsible enough to use spray paint.
I like the idea, but in practice it isn't feasible. The paint will come off during washing. Especially if you're using non toxic super eco low VOC special enviro stuff being marketed today (the stuff sticks to NOTHING). I miss being able to buy good old oil paints in CA.
This is a joke, right?
I actually kind of like it but I was worried about it being on the toxic side too. Maybe if you laquered over the spray paint?
It's punky and fun!
This doesn't look good at all.
I'm thinking about doing this for my cousin's bridal shower, but I'm planing to dip it in paint - which kind will be safe for serving food I'm not sure yet. But since it doesn't have to last through a washing I figure I have a little wiggle room.
no no no
I don't see anything attractive about this.
Not so much daring as daft. As noted by pretty much everyone above, spraying utensils with toxic compounds is beyond stupid, and the end result looks beyond cheap.
This is not appetizing.
I think it looks great! I hand wash my silver so I don't think it would come off soon, especially if it were made for metal paint. I vote YEA!!
Maybe if it was bought entirely pink and funky colors, safe and resistant.
This is hideous.
This pic has been making the rounds. Colorful utensils are appealing, but not spray paint.
I just feel it would never stop smelling like paint and would ruin all your meals - also there's the risk of chipping IN to your food as everyone else mentioned.
For real? No thanks.
I have some old silverware that looks like this.... but it's reserved for mixing paints and doing other crafty things. I'd never even think of eating off of it. Yikes.
Another classic case of "just because you can doesn't mean you should."
This is exactly what happens when someone takes an 'artsy' picture of something people wouldn't take off the free section of craigslist.
Not doin' it for me. And what if it comes off in your hand while you're using it?
"ghetto" huh? I like the idea of it, a way to bring uniformity to mismatched items, or just a bit of whimsical fun to everyday things. buts it's the execution that's poor. spraypaint & food will never be a great idea, even if it's sealed.
How many ways can I say DISGUSTING?
AT, really?
It's not my cup of tea, but maybe in other colors like red or robins egg blue and only on pieces used for decor--like the silverware cabinetry hardware I keep seeing or any of the other dozens of crafts that repurpose old silverware. I could totally dig this technique on pieces like that. But I definitely wouldn't do this to silverware I eat with.
I think these are super fun and love the idea of spraying these and mounting them as art ;)
I just wouldn't eat with them for food safety reasons.
AT - maybe it's time to consider getting an editor with a legal background to preview posts. It is with surprising regularity that I see ideas that are actually dangerous - some very dangerous. A lot of the readers here are young and/or have little DIY experience and just don't know any better than to try some of these things.
Bleechhhhhhhhhh!
No..and I really tried..from every angle..no..looks just like junk...
OMG, is the WallFlowerPower post a joke? I hope so. That's insane.
I think it's pretty!
Slow news day in the design world?
The ones spray painted orange look rusted.
Great idea! I'm going to go try it on my toothbrush...
Love it. I thought about doing this after I saw these http://www.house8810.com/Product.aspx?StockNumber=8006.00002
Of course spray paint is a cheap/temporary solution, but I'm wanting something more permanent... maybe an enamel of some sort or something that has to be heat set. I'm not sure what would be best because I'm not sure what's out there.
@ WallFlowerPower:
haha i think you proved nothing used in food prep or cooking should be spray painted!!
I honestly don't understand the negative comments. This already exists in the design world, it's just executed better and smarter. Open your minds to the possibilities instead of taking the picture they show and tossing the idea. I totally agree spray paint is the wrong solution for eating.
Ha! That's exactly how we mark contaminated tools at the nuclear power plant. If there's purple paint, on the handle, it should not be in a "clean" area.
I LOVE this idea! I think it looks awesome but agree that it's not the greatest idea when it comes to chemicals getting into your food. Like we need another reason for cancer. But so pretty if someone were to produce this in a way that's safer.
No. It looks bad and it seems like "not a good idea." Yuck.
A repeat...and a fairly recent one at that. It's no more appealing now.
just sayin...
I was thinking how pretty the "original" silver patina of the flatware was, ashamed they painted it. To each his own, I guess.
I like it! Not for everyday good silverware- as they pointed out, but for something cheap and fun, it looks great. I can never find spray paint in that shade of pink! Jealous!
horrid. cheap. dangerous.
ugh... sorry AT, tally another one for "its hideous."
Agreed. Spray paint, especially some black glossy is the answer for some things...but this just doesn't do it for me.
There is no way that I would ever do this.
Someone has been HUFFING spray paint over at AT HQ for this post to even have made the cut.
"Sania Pell" is now bookmarked as "insane" in my mind.
people are a w f u l. it is one thing to dislike something, but another to be rude. yikes.
i think this would be a great idea if you had mismatched silverware -- a way to coordinate it, possibly. i don't know why one wouldn't be able to coat it with a sealant or something. overall, i think it's okay. shame on the snobs above.
Inspired! I'm going to spray paint my feet so it looks like I'm wearing socks! Toxic? Maybe, but look how cute!
I really like the LOOK... but echo everyone else on the food safety. No way am I going to put spray paint anywhere near anything my husband and baby will be eating from.
I researched the heck out of looking for spray paint on the OUTSIDE of a metal breadbox and wasn't even willing to do that, so no way Jose on the silverware.
