Maybe your dining room could use a little extra pizzazz. But you don't want to buy new furniture. We've got some ideas to liven things up, and all you need is a little paint and a little bit of time.
Same Chairs, Different Colors
If you already own a matching set of chairs but want to inject a little color into the proceedings, why not paint them all different colors? We're loving the ombre look of the Thonet bentwood chairs in the dining room at the top of this post.

Different Chairs, Same Color
Conversely, painting a bunch of dissimilar chairs the same color is a great way to achieve cohesiveness, and put the focus on the shapes of the different chairs. This is a great budget option, since you don't have to find a matched set of chairs -- you can gather chairs from all over and make them a matched set. We happen to think this looks especially slick in glossy (image 3) or matte (image 5) black.

Howard Butcher Bloc...
Wow, this was posted in the future (3-18 and it's 3-17!)
I love the idea of painting different chairs the same color.. The lavender ones are particularly nice.
I've been collecting chairs for a few years to paint them all the same color. We have 6 so far and I haven't paid more than $15 for any of them. I need 2 more and I'll start painting!
I too like the different chairs, same color idea. collecting *comfortable* chairs from anywhere, giving them a little sanding, and paint the same color and you've got a truly great place to dine, talk, play games, relax.
I like the idea of matching chairs being painted different colors but I really dislike mismatched chairs of any color. I don't understand that concept at all, to me it looks cheap.
If you want to make it even easier, check out the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint line. That's all we use at my shop. No sanding, no priming, very low VOC, beautiful colors.
With as much furniture as we paint at the store, it cuts the work down by about 2/3 and the place doesn't smell like paint all the time.

All FREEEEeeeeeeee!
I always prefer chairs of the same type because at least the comfort level is the same. Different chairs just make it look really jumbled.
I prefer the different chairs in the same color. It looks less cluttered to me and highlights the silhouettes.
I like the way painting the chairs all the same colour makes the silhouettes pop. It makes you appreciate the different shapes without anything else to distract (like colour). I also like the different coloured ones, but it seems like the chairs would become the focal point of the room, so you'd have to want your chairs as the focal point.
I really like the all-grey chairs! I am surprised. I'd thought of doing this, but then thought grey might look only like wimping out on going for all-white or all-black. But it makes the chairs look like shadows in the room. It's a very cool effect! And I think it needs the 2 different chair shapes. All the same would be a little dull.
