One of our favorite ways to decorate is to start with a white canvas. We find this works particularly well for childrens' spaces because many childrens' furnishings and accessories are saturated with color.
If you start with a white canvas, you can build in color with furniture, toys, and textiles and the good news is that almost anything goes. You won't need to worry about staying within a color scheme. The photos of this house in Sweden found at Emmas Design Blogg illustrates this concept beautifully.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Love! We're doing this in our nursery, since we're painting the cribs a kelley green - no need for crazy color on the walls.
A huge white wall fan here. I used to be big on colors, but I began to love how colors from the items of the room would pop out w/ a white wall in the background.
I am planning out my kids room (in my head) for when we move into a bigger place. I am really loving the idea of being able to change the color of the room with things like bedspread and curtains. I have this vision of having a few different bed tapestries/lanterns/artwork and being able to switch them out every 6 months or so. I already painted one of the larger walls in the place where we live now a bright white and its really transformed the room.
