What's better than a cozy night spent curled up in front of the fire? Nothing, that's what. Usually, the word 'fireplace' conjures up images of something very traditional, or maybe a rustic hearth in some cabin in the woods, but living in a modern space doesn't have to mean sacrificing coziness. Here are 15 of our favorite modern fireplaces.

I love these photos!
What? You don't like an old fashioned fireplace?
I love the look of some of these but how can a fireplace be cozy with nary a comfortable seat nearby to sit in as you warm yourself?
beautiful to look at, but totally not practical. Not fire-safe (although they may be gas fireplaces and all those logs may just be for show...) And not heating-worthy.
Another triumph of style over substance.
6 & 7 are thumbs down, but I could take any of the others; even if no fp.
The minimalist style is beautiful, but some of these look seriously unsafe. Like, burning logs rolling around your room unsafe. That's entirely without critiquing their practicality, which having grown up with a fire as the sole heating in winter is a major, huge issue if you want to use it for anything other than occasional atmosphere.
Number 2 is especially terrifying...
Unless they're gas fires with fake logs, in which case fake fire technology is way more impressive than it used to be. :-)
Some of these scare the bejesus out of me, but I love how they look--especially the first one.
classic style, warm feeling.
Beautiful pics of beautiful fireplaces. What is up with all the fear? I did not see one picture of burning logs rolling around the room. These fireplaces have passed their local building codes,btw. I can only assume, being that this is a design site, that the OP posted these for your review of their aesthetic quality and not your credentials of local safety and building regs. Just enjoy.
Fireplaces = yuppie tv
Can anyone tell me what the floor below the fireplace in #7 is made of? I'm wanting to do something with a similar low profile.
I love all of these photos, but I think number 12 takes the top place for me!

Where could I get a chair like the one in the first picture?
