The trap of a staycation is that you are at home and can easily get stuck in your regular routine. Vacationing in your hometown can be fun and relaxing, if you can just get a different perspective. Try getting outside and getting wet, and explore your city from the water.
Go cruisin'. So a week-long trip on the Caribbean Sea isn't in the cards this year. Get a taste with a hometown cruise. From cocktails at sunset in Chicago to a Manhattan sightseeing lunch, Entertainment Cruises has options for varying tastes and budgets in 10 cities. For more activity and adventure, there's a Zumba cruise in Boston and speedboat rides in Baltimore.
Paddle on. Hop in a kayak and take a tour of your city from the vantage point of the ducks. Many operations, like City Kayak in San Francisco and Portland Kayak, offer beginner guided tours that don't require prior experience. If you're a pro, you can rent a kayak and go exploring solo.
Jet around. For some excitement, race around your town on a jet ski. Jet Ski Tours of Miami will take you around Star Island and offers snorkeling — you'll probably see a dolphin (or ten). While it's probably no surprise there's such an option in Miami, did you know you could do the same in New York? Jetty Jumpers takes you around Coney Island, Brooklyn, or Manhattan, and will even provide photos of your trip.
What are your favorite ways to enjoy the water in your hometown?

For an architecture tour by boat I recommend The Chicago Architecture Foundation tour.

Duane, thanks for the suggestion! Next time I'm in Chicago, I'll be checking that out!
I can also vouch for the CAF tour in Chicago!
I would also recommend seeking out a pontoon rental if you are near a river or lake. Friends and I do this once or twice every summer in Milwaukee and it's a dreamy way to spend an afternoon!
This is a great suggestion, whether water is involved or not! I've long noticed that I tend to overlook the nearby attractions in favor of "getting away." My guess is that it's due to thinking I can go there any time.
Another thing: Recently I've been driving to other neighborhoods to take my regular walk. Yes, it's a bit of gas spent, but it's been quite amazing to discover cool enclaves, great yards, and interesting architecture/hardscaping that I never even knew existed so close.
great pic of Boston!
Capital Cruises in Austin! Watch the amazing bat colony emerge. BYOB.
I totally agree! We live in Toronto and if we have a free day we almost always spend it near the water. We bought an inflatable kayak this spring - urban kayaking is so awesome, plus we can take it north when we go camping.
