Lately it seems like everyone, myself included, can't stop talking about Downton Abbey. Every week I wait expectantly for Sunday. I don't want to miss a minute of the drama, the romance, the betrayals - or the furniture.
I like to think of Downton Abbey as a sort of extended Apartment Therapy house tour, where we get to know the inhabitants very well. Sometimes I'll rewind, not to catch a line I missed, but to get a better look at the interiors. Even though my style tends to run a bit more modern, I confess to having occasional pangs of jealousy - "why can't my house look like that?".
One of my favorite rooms in the house, dead Turkish diplomats notwithstanding, is Lady Mary's bedroom. It's a bit like Lady Mary - elegant and serene, but with lots of interesting things going on. For this post, I set out to re-create Lady Mary's room using modern sources. I've created two inspiration boards: an 'upstairs' version, and one with 'downstairs' prices that are a little more within the reach of us commoners.

Upstairs:
Gilt Mirror: Ethan Allen, $1,479
Wallpaper: Farrow & Ball, $285/roll
Cupid Sconce: Vintage Hardware and Lighting, $1,285
Canopy Bed: Cymax, $3,449
Writing Desk: 1stDibs, $3,500
Chair: Theodore Alexander, price upon request.

Downstairs:
Wallpaper, Graham & Brown, $75/roll
Four Poster Bed, Amazon.com, $599
Lampshade, Lamps Plus, $40
Tea Table, Amazon.com, $19
Vintage Photographs, Etsy, prices vary
Bergere Chair, Ballard Designs, $599
Oriental Rug, Wayfair, $280

Drool. LOVE Downton Abbey. Now do Boardwalk Empire!
Ditto the request for Boardwalk Empire inspiration! :)
I agree about the beautiful sets and costumes they are stunning. I wish I could say that about the story/stories.
Oh, no haters on the entertainment value. But, what I love is the deep red sofa in the library - I can't find a photo, unfortunately - any thoughts on similar items out there?
Do you have a staff of 12 servants working to maintain, clean, and run your household? no? Then you shouldn't feel jealous of the Abbey! Just bask in its loveliness... ahhhh.....
damn those price tags
Fun! And I love the comments suggesting a Boardwalk Empire edition. :)
LOVE the high backed red velvet sofa in the library!
Ha, upstairs and downstairs room inspiration! I love it! :D
Love it the drama. Love the decor. Even the servants' quarters are fabulous.
It's a little hard to tell, but I think the library sofa may be the "knole" type. See Anna Hoffman's post from 10/27/11.
Ahhhh Downton Abbey.....according to the PBS website, the upstairs scenes are all filmed in the real Highclere Castle (and according to further research, it is still privately owned by the Earl of Carnarvon (descendant of famed Egyptologist) and Countess Carnarvon--they have spent a lot of time refurbishing the castle--they should give their source for the red sofa, not that it would be accessible to any of us!) The downstairs scenes are all on a film set.
I would like a "steal the style" for Lady Sybil and Lady Grantham's bedrooms too. I love the yellow and rosy pink, respectively. A "steal the style" for the downstairs set would also be fun---all those copper pots, white tile, putty colored paint, and the beautifully simple servants' quarters.
love this show and the style !
