Lately I've been looking around at my colorfully painted walls and wondering if I should rethink things. So when I saw these photos of Stephen Honeyball's River North apartment, I became downright convinced that neutral walls with pops of color is the way to go …
The minute I saw the photos of Stephens apartment at Chicago Tribune, I began to question my love of colorfully painted walls and patterned furniture. By keeping everything neutral in his apartment, Stephen and his designers, James Dolenc and Thomas Riker, created a serene space that acts as a canvas for the art and accessories. Those accessories in turn give the space a lot of personality without being overwhelming.
Of course, we don't all live in bright, 24th floor concrete lofts. But what we can take away from these photos of Stephen's apartment is that keeping the walls and furniture neutral has make a space seem larger and lighter. In small apartments, like my 800 square foot space, creating the illusion of light and space is crucial.

Stunning colors. Stunning art!
I have never been a fan of brightly colored walls in my own space. While I often like other people's courage in using color, because I have an extensive collection of folk art, works on canvas, and works on paper, I find that a neutra background works best for me. That said, my partner and I have a bit of push-me-pull-you over what constitutes neutrality: the only neutral my partner like is white.
Those chairs in the 3rd picture are so cool!
Are those DIY'd? I'm sure they're not and he paid a ton of money for them but I think I can totally figure out how to make them. I also love the bright artwork on industrial look walls!
That rug! The rug! It reminds me of a peacock chenille bedspread.
Anyone know if it is manufactured or handmade?
Woa. LOVE this. That rug is amazing. So gushing over that!
love this entire space! any chance you could provide source for the awesome dog statue in the second pic? this is my second time seeing it in a house tour & i am totally dying over it.
I love it but I'm married to a man who loooooves wall color. Which is why our bedroom is teal. We have a balance between brightly colored walls and neutral walls, and I think that's been the best compromise. But I also carefully accessorize so that if/when we repaint the teal wall I won't have to throw out everything else we own.
Nope! Couldn't get rid of my beautiful, colourful walls. As beautiful as pops of colour in a neutral environment are, I love them too much.
that is not a pad for bachelorhood ... that is a sanctuary for any type of sect of human, that wishes to not be single any more.
I especially love that rug and the use of lavender throughout. It really is peaceful.

Erinlynn, the "dog" is actually a vase by Jeff Koons... It's a numbered edition, the last time I saw it, it was sold at the MOMA store, but I'm sure you can find it on craig's or ebay.
DROOL.
What are those giant rocks? Or is that a close up picture of something small?
Thank you, thank you. Some of us can't paint( renters), some of us are too chicken to paint too brightly, others live with someone who disagrees. I think color is just fine in books and art and fabrics, the walls just recede away.
Dempsern,

I'm not big on purple, but those purples, grays, and whites are great together.
