Name: Steve Halterman and Glen Steigelman
Location: Joshua Tree, California
Size: 1,800 square feet on 5 acres
Years lived in: 4
The jealousy is kicking in! Steve and Glen's incredible Joshua Tree home, surrounding environment and pool make for a relaxed weekend getaway, just a few hours from the city. Steve is a set designer, underground filmmaker and stained glass artist and I am fairly certain this remarkable desert location plays a role in his daily inspirations.

The design of the sixties-era home, funky irrigation tank steel pool and welcoming outdoor entertaining areas all play into the leisurely lifestyle of Joshua Tree. After laying in the hammock for a few hours you can stroll over to the sun lounger and when it gets too hot, take a refreshing dip in the pool. For evening parties, two outdoor fireplaces greet guests and still there is the option for a midnight swim!

Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: 60's California desert cabin
Inspiration: A welcoming and safe place to enjoy friends and family; providing food, fun and the beauty of nature.
Favorite Element: Boulders and close proximity to the national park and the people who love it
Biggest Challenge: Restructuring the house from a series of sloppy additions into a home with a good flow. No more crawling through a window to get to the 3rd bedroom.
What Friends Say: "Do I have to leave?" Our friends love the relaxing energy the house, property, and pool bring to their visit. We are about 2 hours from Los Angeles and a much needed getaway from the urban sprawl.
Biggest Embarrassment: Notice no pictures of the bathrooms — and we want to replace the tile on the floor.
Proudest DIY: Converting a corrugated steel irrigation tank into a swimming pool and the stained glass window in the bedroom
Biggest Indulgence: We love good lamps — Cressey and Martz are our favorites
Best advice: Live in it for awhile before you start changing things
Dream source: Swap meets, yard sales, and thrift stores

OTHER
We scavenge for our furniture, lighting, and hardware. Our favorite places are Sky Valley Swap in Yucca Valley, Golden West and Cypress in Orange County, and any desert thrift or yard sale.

Thanks Steve & Glen!

Sweet. Say hello to everyone at Pappy & Harriet's!
This place is a moderist heaven. Loving the living room rug. I ran across another great modernist home today http://www.aliceindesignland.com/blog/inside-look-dabitos-way.html if anyone else is looking for that type of inspiration.
Holy crap! Home! This house is literally like three doors away from the house I grew up in. I love how they made it modern without giving up that weird desert vibe. Feels like home.
oof, this totally reminds me of my grandparents' house....
Love this. I so wish we could afford a place like this in JT. I lived there for about a year in 5th grade right near one of the entrances to the monument (go Monument Manor). My grandma actually still lives there.
Some day.
I like the idea of using reclaimed products (pool). There is a peaceful feeling to the landscape. What I like especially is that outdoor patio with orange fireplace. It looks like a nice gathering place for friends and family.
Love your dune buggy and multiple outdoor seating/fireplace arrangements. Curious about the pool, is it chlorinated? Nice re-use of the tank.
this is what i'm TALKING about!
I need that stained glass evil eye immediately. Also, I always knew someone could make cheesy wood paneling look cool.
this is most certainly NOT a 'moderist heaven' as Maggie M put it. It's just a dwelling built in the middle of the last century.
All that wood paneling would give me a n aneurysm, I'd HAVE to paint and or remove it. The kitchen cabinets give me the twitchies too. Too cluttered and closed in. The place is too cluttered for me in general.
But the inside is most likely not what this place is about. It's all the outside space that really counts. the natural beauty of the desert is astounding and it is instantly relaxing to be there. I love the pool. It must be awesome to be in it at night and gaze at the stars!
Wasn't this house in Dwell or Sunset a while ago? I recognize that stock tank pool!
Cool - not your standard issue cool, just very cool. Nice job.
Wowee. This is the dream.
The house reminds me of vacations to Washington Island as a kid, and that makes me smile. (even though it's not my taste at all)
I LOVE the stained glass above the bed - it's like the Chagall windows at the Art Institute of Chicago.
I love it! The stained glass is beautiful...did you make the one above the bed? I like that you have kept the original wood feel to the place. The outdoor areas look so inviting and the pool is amazing. Camped often at Joshua Tree as a child and this place showcases the best memories I have of it. Oh...I must visit it again! Thanks for the memories.
I feel like I just entered a time warp.
In a good way.
Ah, California!
Love the dune buggy.
Great home. Love the wall-mounted dresser in one of the bedrooms. Is that handmade or did you buy it at a store?
A welcoming and safe place to enjoy friends and family
"Safe"? As opposed to what, a place with booby traps in the living room? Sheesh!
Still, the dune buggy is cool and the setting for the swimming pool area is magnificent.
Love this.
I didn't think I would love this as much as I do. I love homes like this that totally encapsulate a particular era and aesthetic without being a time capsule.
And holy cranberry sauce! source for that giant Levi's ad?
inspiring
Oh Lord, won't you buy me, a house in the desert.
The pool is awesome. Enough said.
Love the pool. I've been wanting to do one sort of like that, it's on my DIY Wish List.
Really like the outdoor space! Wish I had that big of a porch. Only slightly jealous!!
DUNE BUGGYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love it
As darling as this place is, I just couldn't sleep at night for fear of being smashed by boulders.
Love this place and I love Joshua Tree..usually stay at 29 Palms Inn in one of the adobe bungalows.
I love how relaxed it feels, and to have a work room! The outdoor areas are wonderful, must be hard to head back to LA..
I cannot believe how expense this area is now, I guess there is always Lone Pine, CA
What an amazing property!
Ha ha Blandwagon you always crack me up!
You spoiled bitches!
I love almost everything about it. The wood panelling is just not my style, but I can definitely appreciate it in this house. The exterior is incredible, but my one criticism~mini blinds. Especially one of the couple is a stain glassed artist. I assume the mini-blinds are a temporary fix because the rest of the house looks great. Steven and Glen, I am super jealous of what you have to work with!
I love that you left the kitchen intact. Also love the paneling. Hell, I love the whole place!
haha...Blandwagon's comment made me laugh too. "booby traps in the living room..." lol
¡el patio es fantástico!
