Q: I recently moved back home to the USA after living in the UK for five years and am helping my parents redecorate my old bedroom so my mom can use it as a studio once I've moved out. There is a big wall space that a bookcase currently takes up but it doesn't really suit our purposes for this room. We love this storage unit that I saw from Laura Ashley in the UK, but unfortunately it doesn't seem as if Laura Ashley sells their bigger furniture/storage options on their US website!
We need an alternative but I can't find anything that is nearly as good. Something with some space for books and knick knacks as well as closed cupboard/drawer space is ideal, to hide away the more unsightly paints and bobs and ends that my mom doesn't want on display. Sent by Casey

This looks like the perfect project for a local cabinet maker. They will take exact measurements of the space & fit it out to your needs. Many cabinet makers will work with your budget & offer suggestions for types of woods to help save some money. And if you plan to do the painting of doors/ drawers yourself, you'll save more.
The Expedite from IKEA?
I immediately thought of expedit too - it's a more modern style, but it has the same cubby hole look, and Ikea sells inserts with drawers and doors that you could add wherever you want closed storage.
There's also this cube system from the Container Store:

Again, more modern, and there aren't options for different colors, but it's totally customizable in terms of how big you want it, what types of cubes go where, etc.
If you don't want to do anywork I think the first option is great. If you want to do some work, you could purchase ikea expedit, add legs and a top to it. Then buy all the drawers and doors that go with it. If you wanted a bigger one bolt two together, add a top to it and legs to make it look like one unit.
Another DIY option is to find a similar dresser frame, take all the drawers out and slide hardware. Clean up the inside to make it hollow and then build the middle shelf part to fit in the dresser.
good luck

I like this kind of style, too. And I and my husband designed our TV media stand from Kerf. kerfdesign.com
Looks more like markor than expedit, but that's been discontinued. But pretty recently, so depending on your area it could be an easy find on craigslist. I think it mostly came in a rich brown wood-tone, though.
