Q: My young son has hearing aids, and as he gets older and begins to take responsibility for them I'm looking for a safe, appealing storage solution for them at night. A wall hook? A cool box? Do any of your readers have ideas on persuading a toddler to think it's fun to put away a particular item? And, hopefully, keep them out of reach of his little sister?

Editor: Great question! Readers, what are your ideas? I was thinking of a treasure box - I found this one on Etsy, but you could also buy a blank one at a hobby store and decorate it with something he likes.

White Enamel Four-P...
Cool. I like it!
If he is into superheros or a particular character I'd go to a party store and get him one of those metal lunch boxes. Probably not as cool from a mom perspective, but can really get him excited!
You might consider a Dry & Store or similar device for hearing aids: http://www.dryandstore.com/
Since hearing aids can get dirty and full of moisture from being in the ear and near the head all day, it's a good idea to give them time to dry out. I have a Dry & Store at home that stores my hearing aids all night. I like it.
Not hearing aids but my son started wearing spectacles when he was two and had an older brother and a younger sister who were dying to be in on the fun. He had a special funky glasses case that he put his glasses "to bed in" on the landing strip in the front hall with all the adult keys, wallets and so on... everyone knows that shelf is untouchable, so they were safe. But the job was his... whenever he wasn't wearing them he had to remember to put them up and away... now he is twelve and many more pairs of spectacles have survived!!! I look back and can't believe how well he coped with the responsibility!!! I just wanted to encourage you and say they really can look after them.
Sorry, no storage advice, but good luck keeping them out of reach of the sister! My 2 year old got a hold of my hearing aids last week while I was in the shower (left them on the counter) and threw one down the stopper-less sink...many lessons learned and Thank God by some miracle (and quick plumbing work) it survived the dunk unscathed.
I second that dry & stores are great for maintenance (but you probably already know that)... making a monster box like this would be super fun: http://www.notimeforflashcards.com/2011/05/monster-box.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+NoTimeForFlashCards+%28No+time+for+flash+cards%29&utm_content=Google+Reader
I agree with the fun box idea. (Also, I love Batman!) Since he's so young, I’d randomly put a fun prize or s “good job” note in the box for him to find. Chores don’t always have to be boring, do they?
Keeping his little sister out of the box may depend on her age and mischief level.
oooooohhhH! i"d love to know what others come up with... my 3 1/2 year old wears hearing aids and while she's not responsible enough with them yet, I'd love to store some ideas for when she gets older. We always store them in the "drying case" at night, but ours is just a simple glass jar with the drying beads in it. Maybe you could let him decorate a jar (plastic or glass) that has a screw-on lid. You could then just use the beads that come from a standard drying case and waalaa... his own personal case:)
I had a little felted box but, to be honest, i just put them on my dresser. I still do this. Sounds lame but fussing with opening and shutting something every morning and night was too much bother. I think you might be better off with an open dish/container and teach him that it's kept up high. Maybe a cool step up makes putting away more appealing.

(I'm a Hearing aid wearer since age 3 and mom of two.)
bento lunch containers are usually super fun! for storage. as far as keeping it out of reach of the little one perhaps you could put a mail box in his room (the type that goes on the house )up high by the light switch? or a locker in his room where he can put his special treasures.
You need to use a desiccating storage box of some kind, no matter what you go with. You can but the desiccator in a larger, more fun box or decorate it somehow, but as I'm sure you know, HA's are expensive, keeping them in good shape is way more important then finding something cute to store them in. I bet you could make your own dry storage box with drying beads, that'd be a fun project to involve him in too!
