Q: Help! I am about to fulfill a long-held dream and add a dishwasher to my kitchen...but the store won't install a new dishwasher, only a replacement, nor will they suggest a professional who can do this. I'm not quite sure if I need a plumber or a handyperson or a magician. Does anyone know exactly who handles such projects, and have anyone to recommend in Manhattan?

They have pre-screened people for just about every task.
I had the same problem.
We aren't in NYC, but ran into the same problem last year. We found a handyman who specialized in both plumbing and electrical work, and he got the job done no problem.
One unexpected thing that came up was that we also ended up installing a garbage disposal as well. apparently its some kind of code issue (possibly related to back flow prevention?) So maybe be prepared for that
Kathleen, I work in an appliance store and I deal with this problem daily! You will need a plumber who can also install a 110 electrical outlet, or a handy-person/general contractor familiar with both. I am assuming you already installed some new cabinets, or a space the dishwasher will fit into? If so and the space is adjacent to the sink cabinet, you should just need to install an outlet, then the water line can be tied into your hot water valve for the sink, and the drain line will be tied into the garbage disposal or sink drain. If you use a "high loop" on the drain hose, you should not need an air gap on most dishwashers. I am surprised the store you bought it from did not refer you to someone. I hope this helps!
A handyman should be able to do this easily for you. I'm in the UK - so can't help Manhattan wise - but we have lots of different handy-men companys who show up on motorbikes who will fit a dishwasher in a couple of hours. I'm sure you Manhattanites must have a similar service available?
this is nuts...Lowe's did this for me a few years ago in Florida...cut through the cabinets and everything.
I would hire a real plumber for the tie-in to the drain. If you have ever had a house where the dishwasher backs up into the sink you will know why. Most local codes require an air gap to prevent water from the sink drain back flowing into the dishwasher (where it siphons off and floods your whole kitchen/apartment).
For me plumbing is one of those things where I spend the money to have it done right, floods/water damage/"mold remediation" are too expensive compared to a $200 plumber bill.
I have to ask: Why buy from a store that offers such poor service? Give your business to someone better.
i agree with the post above me
make sure you are getting a good deal out of this. We almost purchased a dishwasher from Home Depot-but after we added in the cost of having someone else install it and all the little tacked on costs it ended up being way cheaper to go with Sears-who's installation was free with purchase.
I bought the additional fittings not included and had a handy friend install it for a case of beer!
PC Richards will send a professional to your place to suggest which appliance will fit and needs to get done. The cost is $25, which can be credited to the work. Once you order your appliance, they come and install.
If you don't already have a space suitable for a dishwasher, you'll need to first hire a cabinet maker.
If you don't have an electrical outlet in an appropriate place, you'll need to hire an electrician.
To install the plumbing, you'll need to hire a plumber.
Of course, a general contractor might be able to do all of the above, or at least manage the installation from start to finish.
Or you could just get a portable dishwasher that doesn't require installation:
