Our containers need to be covered--we've got a couple of cats who tend to be little magpies and steal the goods--especially jewelry--and hide it for their own amusement. After one stole my wedding ring (which we did not find until we moved three years later) we learned that lesson!
@kariwk - that's hilarious! glad you got your wedding ring back, though. It's weird that cat thieves would hide jewelry.
Love the West Elm ones! In college I had a little blue plate from Target next to my bed that served as a jewelry catch-all/coaster. Now I just have a couple of hammered metal bowls from West Elm to hold odds and ends.
@kariwk that is a funny visual and I can relate except one of my Jack Russell's ate my diamond earings..the rest you can imagine.
I have a very old silver tray that holds lotion, reading glasses and chapstick. I love trays! West Elm has has some really good looking ones in that last two years.
I have those bowls from Anthropologie except I paid $4.00 at the Japanese houseware store on Clement Street..
omg! i never knew cats and dogs could be so birdlike in hoarding shiny things. thanks for the info, @kariwk and @b77 !
I use the tart platter from my china pattern. It is 13" round with very low edges, and it's perfect. It holds everything, and if a glass spills, the water is contained.
Sur La Table has an entire section of little dipping bowls for soy sauce or other condiments. I have two of them to catch earrings at the end of the day -- one on the bedside table in the shape of an aqua shell, and another sea-green one in the bathroom with a hobnail surface.
World Market used to have these, as well.
Talk about a "duh!" moment- how did I never think to corral these things in one of my millions of cute little bowls. Or maybe one of my antique teacups? hmmm. Off to shop my apartment...
I love this idea! I think I will use a handmade piece of pottery. I have a shallow dish that would be perfect. The possibilities are endless- jewelry holder in the bathroom, key and sunglasses spot by the front door. Bedroom catch-all makes it to the top of the list. Genious!
What happened to number 3?
There are some smaller antique Pyrex pieces in my collection that work well for this.
Are there any stylish organizers when you don't have a bedside table or surface. I've seen some less attractive mattress thingamabobs but there must be a good looking solution too...
