Jonathan just mentioned our team's affinity for terrariums yesterday, which is opportune, considering I spent this weekend changing out the terradome terrarium. I previously set up a tropical themed setting, but decided this time around, I'd like an even more maintenance-free environment. So now the terrarium is stocked with a myriad of succulents, mostly from my mom's own collection. A close up under the cut.

Most succulents and cacti make for poor terrarium inhabitants. But because the terradome has a large opening, creating a dry environment won't be a problem. The secret is to never over water and to plant succulents in fast draining soil. I'll likely have to water the plants very infrequently, always checking for drained, dry soil. I'll also be moving the terrarium to a room with many windows all facing south and westward, to provide as much bright light during these coming winter months. Hopefully these will thrive, as the terrarium is always a favourite amongst guests.

Will the succulents get moist under the dome?
Sara48: Succulents normally do poorly in closed terrariums. But the terradome has a large hole ontop, and I've also set it up with a subsoil of rocks and charcoal, alongside using fast draining cactus soil to keep moisture at a minimum. I plan to water very infrequently, and monitor the soil. We'll see how it goes being put back into the sunniest room in our apartment.
Part of the reason I shifted over to a succulent setup was the terradome wasn't keep the soil moist enough for the previous arrangement.
I would love to see a "how to" for setting one of them up!
I like the idea of being able to have plants in an enclosed space...keeps my cat from eating them!
midnight: noted! I'd love to do a step-by-step, how-to instruction in the near future.
I'm still all about doing an AT succulent swap (why does that sound dirty?)!
what a coincidence! i decided to make a terrarium for a friend's birthday today since she liked mine so much at home. i can never seem to find the dome-like containers though. where did you find yours?
It must be something in the water! I bought a slew of new succulents from Home Depot last night to revamp my Terra Dome!
