Q: I have been looking for a replacement to my clunky, black plastic clock radio that I got for my 13th birthday for a long time! I can't seem to find anything that looks good and is reasonably priced. I really like the Tivoli Model Three, but I can't justify spending $400 on a clock radio. Any suggestions?

Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_query=clock radio&search_type=vintage&page=1 or Goodwill. Don't buy new if you can avoid it. Even an older AM only radio will tune into a local station with news, traffic and weather!
Whoops, sorry about the link...you get the idea, though.
I have this one, and I love it!
Sony ICF-C492 Large Display AM/FM Clock Radio

Partly I love it because I'm blind as a bat and the numbers are really large, but I also like that has two alarms, and a dimmer, so you can turn the brightness up and down. And it has a very small footprint, so doesn't take up a lot of room on a bedside table.
There's also Clocky, if you want something more unusual:

Bose.
Braun makes products with great industrial design. I like their travel alarm clocks.

Keep an eye on ebay for that Tivoli. We bought one (a different model) for way less than half retail.
I like my Big Ben from LL Bean. But it has no radio and no snooze button (the lack of the latter is actually good for me). Their moonlight clock is also good -- it lights up first, then beeps if the light doesn't wake you up enough to turn it off. It has a snooze button, but no radio.
This is my dream alarm clock! I've wanted one for so long but can't justify the price either...
I've considered this (sans light), but imagine it might end up being even more of a headache than it's worth...if you're handy though...

And then there's these:

This one looks almost identical to the Tivoli you like, for $118. Still quite a bit for a clock but not nearly so bad.

There are some nice ones on homeloo.com that are similar in style to the Tivoli at a much lower price. I've never purchased from that site before so I can't comment on quality.
I like the clocks by Furni:

And the prices are not that steep for handmade items.
Use your phone - especially if you have a smartphone like an iPhone.
Oh my! The suggestions by ajh (above) are the BEST! That being said, I've been in a similar predicament and have been considering buying a vintage clock from etsy (vintage-->electronics-->clock or vintage-->electronics-->radio). However, the 2 that ajh pointed out are even better I think, and I'm going to get one of the 2.
Thank you for all the great suggestions! I'm really pumped about this one: http://www.highfashionhome.com/radio-alarmclock-back-in-time.html, but now I have so many to choose from!
I have the tivoli clock radio, and would not recommend it. Sure, it looks good, but for that is supposedly well designed, it has a lot of design problems, namely:
- To change the alarm time, you can only go backwards - ie, if it rang at 7am and you wanted to snooze for like, 30 minutes, and have it ring again at 7:30am, you would need to twist the dial around for 11 1/2 hours, instead of forward by 30 minutes.
- When you change the alarm time, it makes a pretty loud grinding noise, potentially waking up any bed-mates
- The volume button is sleek, but at a price - you never know what volume it's set to until you turn on your radio. There is no way of knowing if it's set to level 1, 2, 3, etc, since there are no markings.
- My dial cover fell off within the first 6 months
The iPhone makes for an attractive alarm clock. And it makes phone calls too! I just have a dock next to my bed, and pop the phone in each night to charge it, and let it wake me up in the morning. It takes up very little room on my shelf, and if you need to look at the time in the middle of the night... There's an app for that.
Back in 2007 I stumbled upon a clearance at target. The model three was going for $50 so I cleaned them out. Kept one and gave the rest as gifts. If you're lucky enough you may find another deal like that.
I just got my new clock at Target. Before that my alarm clock was from Radio Shack.
(Note: The Target clock I chose has blue LED numbers -- and those puppies are BRIGHT! I have to cover the face of the clock with paper or something so it doesn't glow into my brain all night keeping me awake!! Didn't know that when I bought it, never would have thought about it. It's an ok clock, otherwise, though so I kept it. But you might want to consider that...)
Check out the clock radios by Sangean. They are about $120 but look a lot like the Tivoli clock radios. They are not great if you are constantly changing the time you want to wake up (as it is a bit of a pain to change), but they wake you to radio or alarm, have various brightness settings, and start out quiet and get louder if you ignore them. Plus they look good.
I have and love this http://www.momastore.org/museum/moma/ProductDisplay_Round%20LED%20Clock_10451_10001_43839 You can also get it from other stores.
The only problem with it is that the LED is VERY bright, which is easily fixed by buying a piece of flexible yellow plastic and sticking it on the face - no adhesive necessary, it just stays on and dims the LEDs to a reasonable level.
It is inexpensive and well designed.
I have a Boston Acoustics SOLO. It sounds better then the tivoli (not as cool looking) and is only around $100. Very functional and it sounds freaking amazing.
Use your cellphone's alarm function
It's already paid for and takes up no more space in your bedroom.
i like the lexon alarm clocks...

I love the Lexon clocks!
Try urban outfitters. If you like that midcentury look, they have a lot of home accessories that fit the bill. And they aren't super pricey.
