Ronda recently moved into a large, western-style town home in Colorado, and is slowly making personal changes. Now, she's come to us for some assistance choosing a new paint color…
This is what Ronda has to say about the current paint color:
"The walls, carpeting and floors are all warm, light-brown or cream tones. The furniture is an eclectic mix of southwestern and modern pieces, most of which are also cream and brown. These warm tones heat up the house, especially with the sun hitting this orangey-brown accent wall through a large window in the living room. Does anyone have any suggestions for a tone that would not offset our home's decor, but would cool down the wall? We were thinking a taupey or grey, light brown. Suggestions?"
Let's help Ronda out, readers. What are your color suggestions for cooling off this space?

I love the print above the mantle, why not take a cue from that cool blue in the centre? The browns, creams and pops of red in your space would look lovely against a robin's egg blue. If the robin's egg is a little TOO blue, maybe try a blue-grey shade?
If the carpeting and floors are all warm, light brown, or cream, I definitely wouldn't paint the walls a light grown. Grey might complement it, or it might make it look weird.
If you want to go bold, I suggest teal. If you want something subtle, I suggest a tannish stone color. Like this: http://southwestaffinity.com/artifacts/Hopi_pottery_2_side.JPG
I agree with Jadis1; a robins egg blue, or a light blue-grey shade would look lovely.
I think a steely grey would be nice also. It would compliment the warmer shades in your furniture and make them pop more, rather than blend. If you stick with brown shade, you're going to have the same issue you already have.
I agree with Jadis1: if you're looking for something a bit more muted for a Robin's Egg, take a peek at Swan Sea (Behr 500F-1) or Saltwater (Behr 580E-2). They look a little brighter online than in person, but they would cool it down without clashing.
Where's that art above the fireplace from? Looks cool.
Teal! Teal! Teal! It will be a great complementary shade to the warm tones in your accent pieces.
I love both pieces of art. I think this might be a good canidate for white on white with the walls and furniture. It would definitely reflect sunlight and I think it would be fresher than multiple neutrals. If you go this route, I would add some more colors in accent pillows/throws.
I was thinking the blue, too. It seems to be in both art pieces, even.
I have a wonderful idea. To bring up the color in the rather drab beige brown, why not try the Farrow and Ball paint Middleton Pink? It is a beautiful glowy pink, not too pink, almost a neutral, and will pick up the whole room.
I like the wall color; its the wall-to-wall that doesn't work. I know that paint is cheaper than carpet, but if you have wood or Saltillo tile underneath I would get rid of the carpet. It sounds like you have a passive solar thing going on, which can be awesome for keeping your heating bills down. Perhaps you could put up an awning to shade the window that's getting so much sun. Another solution for shade in the Rocky Mountain West would be a pergola covered with a deciduous vine: shade and cooling in Summer and allowing sun in the Winter; think portal.
agree with a grey-blue shade. will compliment the art, bring life to the neutral furniture and cool down the warm colored flooring.
If you're willing to go bold, a dark teal that everyone is suggesting or Benjamin Moore's "Mississippi Mud" it's a black/plum brown. It's also a very cool color that makes the browns from leather and wood just glow beautifully. It showcases artwork fantastically, too.
I have it in my bedroom. We have an antique wood bed with a high head and foot board - the wood is dark but it looks almost light next to this dark color and it just glows. You notice the furniture and artwork, not the walls. Just a thought...
use the warm aqua that is so prevalent in western motifs. it's the perfect accent.
Bluish green or greenish blue would be warmer than plain blue.
You want cool? Think blue. But no Robin's Egg or Teal. This is a home, not a torture device. Anything off the bottom 3 rows of Sherwin Williams (not an endorsement) color-picker. My top 3 choices would be "Icelandic" "Atmospheric" or "Open Air" in that order.
I note 2 pieces of wall art in the room. You have something against decorating it?
Sensational good color, nothing to say just fantastic necessarily phenomenal, I like the idea but it would be desirable to give a more cream.
