Q: Hi there - was hoping to get some suggestions about a new coffee table - I finally got a new rug - it's a Calvin Klein cowhide strip patchwork. I live in a small alcove studio in NYC that's really bright. I think something black marble top could look chic and fun, but wasn't sure. Any ideas are welcome.

You don't need a new coffee table -- the one you have looks great. However, if you do get rid of that one, let me know... I live in NYC and am in the market.

Honestly i would replace the TV stand instead of the coffee table. Regardless I don't think a black topped coffee table would look good. The glass top works for you here because the spece is small. I would look at replacing the TV stand with a taller console that is made of wood with glass doors.
id suggests one made of reclaimed timber, i've recently made a new desk this way. ALthough its mainly to help with cable management i think it looks just great as well.
have a look
here for what i've done and here for where i got the idea! i think a dark wood would look great in there!
I agree that a new tv stand (larger scale for that tv) would be a bigger improvement than the coffee table.
I agree with labchick. Replace the TV stand with a nice console and mount the TV or put it on the console. But I'd stay away from black or any very dark color.
The space is quite small and it seems to be intentionally done this way. Maybe you should move the furniture around so that more light can filter through. For example, move that floor lamp to the other side of the couch. When light is coming through the windows, the lamp creates a shadow.
Ditto on replacing the TV stand with a longer console/credenza - that stuff on the floor next to the TV needs to be put away properly.
The furniture's arranged tightly, so a small storage coffee table with rounded corners and edges in a sturdy material, e.g., wood, not glass, would be smart. There's already a lot of black, so repeat another existing subdued color for cohesiveness and the look of space.
Keep everything the way it is! It's beautiful. If you go w/a larger TV stand, go wider, not taller, unless you want to turn your already-large TV into the focal point. As an experiment, print a copy of that photo and color the coffee table w/a black marker. Too much black, no? Anything solid would take away from your rug and the great balance of that room.
Love the rug! It is really amazing. I agree that the tv stand should be changed. The TV could be wall mounted, and even just a low expedit on the ground with books, etc. would look better. I would do a wood coffee table. I like the idea of the slatted bench, which would pick up nicely on the linear rug.
I don't see anything wrong with the existing coffee table. The glass top is perfect for such a small space. Another vote for a longer (not wider) tv stand (to get all the stuff of the floor and behind closed doors).
@lolagirl - Are you talking about depth? Depth is the which is the distance from the front of the console to the back of the console. Width is the distance from the left side to the right side.
Another reason wood in the colors already suggested would be good is that it wouldn't increase the amounts of gray and black.
I have to agree with the TV stand replacement. But I would also change the coffee table. Personally, I love the Ikea Stockholm series and I think it would fit in there very well, especially the square coffeetable and the TV bank in oak veneer.
definitely agree w/ those who say the $$ would be better spent put towards a media stand or console. the coffee table looks fine (at least from the photos)--it's glass & thus fits nicely into a smaller space. you could paint the legs black if you need something in that color. but a little bigger console to store everything properly & hide the clutter as mentioned above would tremendously improve your space.
Wow, I'm surprised at all the love for the current coffee table--to me it looks like something from the early 90s--maybe something that would appear as office decor on Seinfeld.
I agree with the suggestion for a light but warm colored wood table (maybe something with a slightly rough/rustic feel to it, or something vintagey--either way, something with character), and the suggestion for a longer, lighter colored TV console. The Ikea Stockholm series looks like a nice possible choice.
You could use one or two storage ottomans, perhaps with reversible lids/casters, as a coffee table. You could put a tray on top. They also could be used as seating or side tables.
Since the space is small, how about a clear table like this: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=114&f=699
Takes up no visual space.
I have a similar furniture arrangement. I find that, for practical purposes (read: everyone sitting around table has ample place to set drinks or even place to put feet on), a square coffee table works for me. One of my favorite coffee tables is the barcelona table. There are some other nice square glass coffee tables at Room and Board.
I love this little guy:

Relatively affordable too!
Try Room and Board's "Slim 30 Round 16h Cocktail Table" or the "Classic 36 Round 16h Cocktail Table Base". Can't beat the price and size of the "Slim" line for a quick update. But, I agree with most - paint the legs of the current table and spend money on the media cabinet.
I love the table! If I had to change any aspects.. new seat covers for the patterned chairs! a solid cool toned color - would make for a great look as well as hanging the TV on the wall to open up space - then nice shelving underneath for storage..
I'm with Amanda. A white marble topped table would class the place up and be light enough to open the room up! I would go with a rectangular one though. Maybe the portica from Room and Board with the white marble top!
I see a fairly large square table, probably with a glass top, rounded edges and metal legs that curve under the top.
Have you tried the rug on the diagonal, under the sofa? Everything is very linear and square, and the strong lines of the rug reinforce that. Also, consider adding some texture - everything looks like it has a flat finish. Even though it isn't remotely my taste, I want a shaggy white wool thrown pillow on the sofa.
And, yes, do something about the TV stand.
I like the idea from Miami's Elaine suggestion of using to ottomans that can also be used as additional seating.
I think the room looks nifty just the way it is. If you feel compelled to replace the table, I would stick with glass. I don't find the TV and stand particularly objectionable; the bicycle hanging from the wall is likely to be a bigger focal point.
I agree with most on this post...a new console will have a greater overall effect on the room than a new coffee table. The black is somewhat overpowering.
I'm looking to replace my current couch and I'm in love with both the style and color of yours. Where did you happen to purchase it?
I'm going to suggest some favorite classics.
Fontana Coffee Table - Simplicity at its finest. http://www.yliving.com/fnt-2633.html
Platner Coffee Table - Shine. Industrial. Elegant. http://highbrowfurniture.com/tables/products/platner_tables/
Barcelona Table - Classic

I love the rug, looks great with the sofa, the chairs not so much. I'm with the others in that the TV is more of an issue. A credenza/media cabinet would be more in scale to the TV, and provide additional closed storage. When you do replace the coffee table, I'd suggest staying with rounded shapes. Keeping with what's already here, I like a Noguchi coffee table, or the Bond table from Room and Board, the Clairemont from Crate and Barrel, or the Smart Round Marble table from CB2. I'm sure you'll find the one that's right for you.
Agreed with the above on getting a cool media unit/armoire for your tv. would also afford a lot of good storage and could be a great focal point for the room (http://articles.ivillage.com/2003-02-10/Home/21648487_1_entertainment-center-furniture-sofa). If your stuck on the idea of I coffee table, I have seen great old school steamer trunks used as coffee tables, and they are awesome for storage.
I could see how you feel the coffee table is a bit '90s, but nothing some paint on the legs wouldn't help. Agreed on the new TV stand, might help the room feel finished once your components weren't on the floor (i'm dealing with that now).
Can I ask you how you like the Gigi Room & Board chairs?! They're on my short list for a very similar layout, but I fear they're not big enough to be comfortable for family/friends. I'm stuck between those and the Modesto chairs from Arhaus http://www.arhaus.com/Collection.aspx?name=Modesto%20Collection . Curious to hear your thoughts! :)
I really like the idea of an old chest. You have some vintage patterns in the room, and I think it would really tie it all in.
I agree with everyone about the television stand, it's very large and distracting..
Did someone already suggest replacing the TV stand? Yeah.
That end of the room feels really dark and cluttered. Maybe just because things are in the shadows?
I'm not sure what kind of coffee table would really make the room, but I think it needs to be something closer to the honey end of the color spectrum than than the black end, to keep the room from getting too dark.
Hi all -thanks so much for the suggestions.
I guess I hate the coffee table most because it _IS_ from the 90's, and I've never found it to be that interesting. That said - I agree and will start saving for a new credenza (maybe a marble top florence knoll.. pretty).
Answer to a couple questions
The couch is from Room and Board, but I don't think they have it anymore, I bought it two year
the gigi chairs are _really_ comfortable, and super fun. i think they're really bright and happy. the colors can be a bit of a pain to coordinate with though
thanks!
I think a noguchi coffee table would fit in there perfectly with the style
I would use 2 small garden stools, eames walnut stools, or something of equivalent size.
Something small, portable, and with double usage as extra seating would be a great improvement. A large coffee table, especially a square one would make a really awkward traffic pattern in the room.
Something like this looks great in multiples:http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=114&f=6031
I would suggest a lower table, perhaps a ebony stained piece of wood wiped down good so you could still see the wood grain.--on rolling casters. Anthropologie had a coffee table similar to the one im trying to describe. it would be pretty simple and rather cheap to piece one together yourself.
Glass top is really the best option for you with a small NYC apartment. If you want it to feel a little more cohesive with the other items in this area try painting the wood legs to a darker color to better match the wood of your TV console and the legs of your other side chairs.
