Q: I need ideas for hairdryer storage in a small bathroom. I've moved into a small studio with limited cabinet space and I'm using it every day (I'm tired of tripping on the cord.) My under-sink cabinet is too small for an inside-the-door rack. Ideally, I'd like to suspend the dryer from the wall in a way that is cheap, heat-resistant and not ugly. I have a free wall but am not sure what to do

Shaw's Original Fir...
Are you set on keeping the hair dryer in the bathroom? I dry my hair in the bedroom area because the bathroom gets too hot. I keep a large galvanized bucket next to my dresser to hold all my hair stuff. The bucket looks nice, and hides all my products well. It also makes clean-up easy -- I just throw all the bottles/dryer/brushes right in there.
ummm what's wrong with just putting it into the towel basket? or adding another basket just for the drier? function & feng shui can coexist!
Galvenized bucket screwed into the wall below the hand towel hook?? Buckets are cheap at hardware stores. (or if you are close to a rural area try a farm store like farm and fleet or Rural King, they have tons of sizes and shapes)
Retractable cord hair dryer. Keep it in a drawer.
Have the same problem and am seriously considering this:

Does anyone know where the baskets in the photo are from?
I like the idea. My kids have a very small bathroom and the hairdryer is always getting thrown under the sink. No room anywhere else for storing it so a retractable cord on the wall - will try it. Try blending the color to the wall color and it will not look so ugly. White wall, white holder, white hairdryer - if possible.
Put it in a small, drawstring bag of your chosen style and hang it on a hook in the wall closest to where you use it. Canvas, burlap, and leather are heat-resistant. Kinda like this.
Google to the rescue:

A couple options for walls:

I also like this one, since you won't have to drill anything:

If you got a couple ceramic knobs or hooks (what size depends on your hairdryer, I think), you could mount them on the wall and probably hang your hairdryer between them (one knob on each side of the handle, and the hairdryer flat against the wall). I'm not sure I'm explaining it clearly. Alternatively, you can buy hairdryers that hang on the wall.
Oops you totally mentioned that your cabinet is too small, ignore the second option then.
Does your hairdryer have a loop on it? It would be where the cord attaches to the dryer itself. If so, just screw a small coat hook into the wall, and use the loop to hang it.
I have a TINY bathroom, and that's how I store my hairdryer. It works really well!
I have a 3M adhesive hook stuck on the side of my small sink unit. I can hang my hairdryer by the small loop on its handle and it keeps the cords off the ground. :)
I used a wall-mounted toothbrush holder to "holster" my hair dryer in my last apartment. It was perfect! It was out and easy to reach when I needed it, but stayed out of the way the rest of the time. I used something like this, but without the glass:

Okay, I give up...how does one do links on these boards?
There are several options here: http://www.organize.com/bath-hair-care-storage-hair-care-storage.html
Similar to hs09in, I have a small hook on the inside of the door of my VERY small under-the-sink storage. There is a little loop on the hair drier, so it fits on the hook perfectly, then I just wrap the cord around the loop a couple of times and it is a perfect solution. Doesn't take up any of my sink storage, either because nothing else was on the door!
I hate bathroom clutter, so the thought of being able to see a hair drier hanging on the wall is too much for me!

I store mine under the sink but my MIL stores hers from a coat hook on the wall.
I simply put one of those white plastic hooks with the sticky backing on the side of the cabinet, where it is nicely hidden, and the hair dryer hangs there. The hook has been there for years and hasn't come unstuck.
I would go for one of those metal rings one often sees at hotels or gyms where you can just stick your hairdryer through and it will hang there. Perfect if you are using it often.
I would not leave it plugged in though, but that's just me beeing afraid of fires.
I have the smallest bathroom imaginable and no storage. I keep my hair dryer and brushes in a tote bag that I hang from a hook over the door. Out of the way and out of sight.
You can buy a wire holder to wall mount designed to hold a hair dryer. Valsan is one company that makes these-you can take a look on their website http://www.valsanbathroomsusa.com/
I think the baskets are from CB2. If the idea is to not have to look at it, regular dryer holders aren't going to work. How about another of those baskets, higher up (above eye level), lined with a towel, which you could then hide the dryer?
If it's ok to look at, wind the cord and hang it on something like the Grundtal single bar rack from Ikea. You could also hang up mirrors, brushes, possibly the little caddies for supplies.
I'm a vote for hook on the wall! Upgrade to one that looks nice (salon style) if you're fussed about it.
Every hair dryer I've owned has had a small loop in the plastic near the handle--designed just for a hook! I'm a hairdresser, and in my salon, each station has a small hook that we use to keep our dryers out of the way. Cheap, easy solution: hook to the side of your cabinet or on the wall.
I have a hotel-style wall mounted one with a telephone style cord. Works great and looks tidy.
I use a chrome paper towel holder that hooks on my toilet. I store my flat iron and hair dryer in there!
I've used the Componibili and it works really well if you have a little bit of extra floor space for one.
I have always lived in studios with teeny tiny bathrooms, and have somehow stocked up on tons of Blomus stuff to organize. Affordable but sleek so things don't end up feeling cluttered (which seems likely if you're just hanging it on a plastic hook or tossing it in the bin). I have this for my hairdryer: http://www.lumens.com/PRIMO-Hairdryer-Holder-by-Blomus/uu309315/Product
I have this problem, I've got a floating vanity so I just throw the hair dryer under there. Out of sight out of mind. I suppose I could get a basket for it but haven't bothered.
Anyway ... another option is to get a new hair dryer. I would check out bed bath & beyond. If your vanity is too small to house the hair dryer then there might be an equally powered smaller hair dryer out on the market.
You could use one of these wall mounted planters by Wallter http://foldbedding.com/product_info.php?cPath=47&products_id=134
If you're in the vicinity of an Ikea, these are pretty handy:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30154595
Make a loop so your hair dryer can rest off the floor if it doesn't have a "hanging tab".
With this narrow system, you've got extra hooks, too to hang other things from. I've got five of these hung up vertically on a skinny wall in my bathroom that hold all of my accessories.
Another vote for tote-bag-on-a-hook. Who wants to look at a hair dryer?
you couldn't put a hook inside your under the sink cabinet?
Get a canvas shoe bag with multiple pockets (full door size) and hang it in the back of the door. You can easily store all kinds of stuff in it while looking relatively uncluttered due to the deep canvas pockets.
I put a ceiling hook into my wall right by my electrical outlet (placement similar to yours) (be sure to use a screw plug so the weight doesn't rip the hook out of the wall); my blowdryer has a handy hanging hook right where the cord meets the handle; if yours doesn't have this you could always tie a string or ribbon to your dryer by the handle/cord, and hang it from the hook... good luck! :)
Most hair dryers have a loop so you can hang them. I either buy a cute, decorative hook and hang it next to the mirror in my bathroom, or one of those great 3M removeable hooks. I blow dry my hair everyday and it makes no sense to have to wind up the dryer and stash it away everyday.
I know you said cabinet space is limited, but have you seen those stackable wire baskets that slide out? Nothing fancy, but they get the job done for me. The top holds all my products, so I don't lose any more space, and the bottom holds my hair dryer, straightener, etc. perfectly. I got a similar one at Walmart for less than $10, but this one from BBB is nicer.

we live in a small space also. right now, the hair dryer has a small hole at the bottom of the handle. we fitted a carabiner in the small hole and hangs the dryer on a hook behind the door. The cord is not retractable, so i just looped a loose knot to hold up the cord.
you can try to look for a U-shaped hook, similar to guitar hooks in hardware stores. But not sure if this tends to fall off (?)
Can you hang a wire basket on the inside of a cabinet door, and keep it there?
Small coat hook fixed to the wall at counter height to the right of the sink, tie wrap to keep the cord loops neat, and then just hang the dryer on the hook by the loop at the back of the dryer.
I had the same issue with my teeny-tiny EV bathroom. I put cup hooks higher up, inside the vanity so that my hairdryer, mirror, and (big) round brush take up unused space between the side of the vanity and the sink's plumbing.

I have a fold up, retractable cord hairdryer that fits perfectly under my sink in the nook the pipes create...I cant stand anything other than my soap dispenser on my sink top. I have a teeny vanity and I very strict about what goes in there. I put in shelves that are for kitchen cabinets (for plates and saucers) to create more shelves and i have everything in flat low sided baskets. One basket has my brushes, i just pull out the basket and dryer and replace when done.
I don't know if you have room in your sleeping area for a vanity, but that's what I did. It's a waterfall vanity with a triple mirror, and I put hooks on the back of the side mirrors where I keep the hair dryer and the curling iron. All cosmetics, hair care products and grooming supplies are kept it it's generous drawers. I don't know why vanities when out of style, because now that I have one, I won't ever go back to peering at the mirror next to the toilet.
I just use those command hooks one for the hair dryer the other to hold the cord nicely (ok it was for the straightener but the hole on the cord wasn't wide enough for the hook). I have also used cup holders (take out the cup and insert the hair dryer) but couldn't find a nice cheap wall mounted cup holder...
I just put an S-hook on my towel bar and hang my hair dryer by its hanging loop. Pretty straightforward.
I'm with ndj99987. I'm always relieved (and cooler) to get out of the bathroom and do my hair in front of the mirror in the bedroom. There's elbow room there and storage room in the dresser for a dryer.
I've got one of these and it works great. I've got it on the side of my dressing table, but it would work in the bathroom, too.
Thanks for the ideas, everyone!
@FengShuiByFishgirl: The reason I can't put it in those baskets is... that's not my bathroom in the photo. :)
@ Everyone else: I apparently own the only hair dryer in the world without a "hanging tab" or whatever. It's just a cord, nothing else. I tried to loop it but it won't stay. And I can't drill holes in the walls because of my lease. Yay!
I ended up suspending an over-the-door basket inside the cabinet from a loop of string, so that it hangs below my weirdly huge sink basin and still lets the cabinet close. It's not pretty, but it's not on the floor, either. Thanks for all the input-- I'll look into getting some hooks to try-- or maybe a better hair dryer with a loop.
years ago i searched for a wall mount hair dryer holder that let me dry my hair hands free. found a woman in canada who sells exactly what i imagined. not sure why it hasn't taken off. i still have it 6 years later, use it every day:
http://stores.ebay.com/Lianne-Products
I have the best system for this I've ever had as a result of a shelf placed too high on the wall above the toilet by a previous occupant of my apartment. I use my hair dryer at least once a day, and I like stuff I use frequently to be handy...I don't like to have to take it out and put it away again. (Which is lucky for me, because my bathroom is so small that it has very little storage.)
Shelf is thick green bahroom glass, attached to the wall with two chrome and pocelain knobs. As there is a little space between the back of the shelf and the wall, I stuck the cord there behind the shelf, where it rests slightly lower than the shelf on the two shelf hanger knobs. As the room's outlet is just below one side of the shelf, the plug end of the cord dangles next to the outlet. My hair dryer sits on the shelf. The cord being sort of wrapped around the shelf hangers keeps it fairly secure. It helps that my dryer is small, probaby travel size, rather than one of those big L-shaped ones.
I used to leave it plugged in until a friend told me how her hair dryer fell onto her sink while she was at work, turned itself on and burned her bathroom down. So now I just plug it in (though I'm thinking about getting one of those outlet switches so I can leave it plugged in and just turn the switch on and off), pick up the dryer and use it standing right there, as my sink and mirror above are right next to the toilet, set the dryer back on the shelf, and unplug. The fact that the cord is draped over the shelf hangers, in the crevice behind the shelf, helps keep if from falling off the shelf. I like this system so much I'll have to install a similar shelf in my next place.
I also think vanities are useful. But I like access to water when grooming. So I think the best place for one would be in the bathroom rather than in bedroom or dressing room. If I ever have a really big bathroom, I'll build one in or get an antique one.
How about a new hair dryer with a retractable cord? Like someone else said then you can keep it in a drawer. I use this one by Conair: http://amzn.to/hMoBZH
Retractable cord all the way! Love it!
I keep mine in the bottom drawer of the dresser in the bedroom. I grab it and take it to the bathroom to use, toss it back in when I'm done. Keeps in out of sight and you don't have to worry about leaving it plugged in and dropping it the toilet, bathtub, sink full of water.
I love all the ideas about the hairdryer, but can anyone tell me where to get wire baskets like the ones in the picture to put towels in? I love that idea for extra storage.
Remember the days when bathrooms had wall mounted cup holders? Some had holes for toothbrushes, too?
My mother used to use one of those sans cup. She'd put the nozzle of her hair-dryer in it like a gun-sling. I always thought that was super-cool, and what I wanted to do ... except the nozzle of my hairdryer was too big for the cup holder I had. Maybe that would work?
Though ... you'd have to screw it into something ... so I guess not.
http://www.amazon.com/Taymor-Round-Dryer-Holder-Nickel/dp/B002AMW3Y2
just use something like - either attach to the wall or the vanity next to the toilet paper so it is out of the way when you're not using it
I use these:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30184446
I get a little rail that fits 4 of them: one for my hairdryer, one for my curling iron, one for my straightener, and one for my hairbrushes. The black or white looks sleek, but I like the other colors too for an extra splash.
I know you said that your cabinet door is too small for an inside the door basket, however, I did have a very similar problem and remedied it by screwing in small hook into the cabinet and hung the hairdryer by the small loop at the end of the handle. if you don't have hooks that are small enough you could always use a nail- i did when hanging up my flat iron.
I cant see your cabinet...Mine is a similar width but it doesn't go all the way to the floor. I found a great woven basket (container store) that was pretty much the same dimensions and slip it under the cabinet with all my hair goodies. It works great!
I do the same thing as hs09in: a small adhesive hook on the side of the cabinet. It's perfect.
Look at guitar wall hangers. They come padded to help with the heat and are usually nice looking. Depending on your personal aesthetic, you can even find some funky alternatives or a nice cheap simple one like this: http://www.amazon.com/String-Swing-Hardwood-Studio-Guitar/dp/B0002GLCRC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324572892&sr=8-1
Fab bathroom, btw.
I know you don't have much room, but I use a large, wide but shorter height, clear tupperware container to store my hair products, hairdryer, brushes, etc in it! I just don't use the top . That way, I can store things up right and be able to see everything!
xx Katrina
get a wall mounted hair dryer - they use them all the time in Hotels
