Q: I recently graduated from college and will be moving into my first apartment in a few weeks and am looking for a DIY to re-create these amazing wall sconces from CB2? Any ideas on how I could re-create a similar wall-hanging for less?

White Enamel Flatwa...
honestly its 50 bucks, wait till they have a sale....
Pipe fittings fom the hardware store.
I second the pipe idea. Or maybe you could use pictures frames?
I've been mourning the fact that West Elm's Manzanita Wall Art is no longer available and trying to think of wats to DIY something similar. I love their sconces in my bedroom. Le sigh.
If you have to DIY CB2 stuff, you might be spending your time/money the wrong way.
It's not exactly the same, but what about painting the unfinished shadow boxes you can get a craft stores dark grey, and then hanging them in a similar grouping as the sconce? You could put tealights in little glass cups inside and on top of the boxes. (Although maybe the LED tealights would be a better idea with wood.)
@ Matt M - Your comment is pretty insensitive. I remember being fresh out of college, and $50 was a big deal. I had to take it out of my food money to buy a $70 Craigslist couch.
If you want to DIY you could use some second hand picture frames and arrange them in a similarly overlapping pattern. You can use wooden dowels as legs on the frames if you want it have more depth like the one pictured above. Then glue something to hold candles—probably best to buy something that has a small glass cover on it for safety, or you could use fake candles and then you could easily make your own holders even out of sections of paper towel roll with some paint. But at such a low price I wonder if it would save you any money doing it yourself if you don't already have the materials.
I bought a similar wall sconce from Target for $15, believe or not! For $30, I bought two for less than the price of one from CB2.

Did you take welding in college?
A quick google search lead me to this. Its not exactly the same, but it is a

Sorry, that should be it is cheaper.
For a similar look, but likely not a similar function, you could use balsa wood from a craft store to create overlapping squares and paint it the desired color. For obvious reasons of flammability and strength they might not be suitable for candles... but perhaps some little led lights? I bought tiny (TINY) battery-powered led lights to hang off centerpieces at my wedding and something like that might add a bit of twinkle.
At first I thought the same thing as the first 2 commenters---but then I realized (after viewing them on CB2's site) that you probably want to make several of them, like 3-5 and cluster them on a wall. At $50/each, that will be pricey.
--Sorry I have no DIY tips though.
Good luck.
I'm going to suggest you find something similar cheaper. I'm not sure if a do it yourself is going to work out, and as some have linked, similar things can be found for less. If you don't want to buy online, try places like Marshall's. They often have this type of decor for cheap(er) than cb2.
Ugh. Rant alert.
These are not amazing. They are a knock off of a knock off. Go to a yard sale. Buy a similar version for $2 that people are getting rid of.
Go to Goodwill or Salvation Army.
Sorry to be overwrought over this wrought iron crap.
If you're near a store like Home Goods or TJMaxx, go in and ask them. I bought the big version of these for $20. They had the small ones (exactly what you have pictured) for $10 each.
Walmart has something similar.
