Painting walls a dark, moody color seems to be the in trend right now. One of the classic interior decorators, Billy Baldwin, used black paint on all four walls of his tiny New York apartment. His strategy was to give the illusion of a larger space by making the walls simply disappear.
Using a dark color in any space is a bold decision, but I am considering painting one wall in my bedroom black, but I have seen both good and bad results of painting with a dark color.
Has anyone painted a wall in their home black? There seems to be a formula for successfully pulling together a dark interior, especially in a bedroom and I'd love some suggestions on paint gloss level, exact hue of black or dark grey, how to pull off the look, lighting requirements, etc.

My living room is almost black...
...Benjamin Moore calls it "Black Bean Soup" - It's a super-dark brown.
The way to make dark colors like this work is to have contrast, excellent lighting and lots of reflective surfaces. Keep the furnishings light & colorful, use lots of lamps, keep your window coverings light and open to allow lots of light into the room and use mirrors in gilded or silver frames.
I used an Eggshell for my room which gives a slight sheen, but there was a recent article in Architectural Digest where an apartment has Indigo lacquered walls - Glossy dark paints only work well when your walls and your paint application is absolutely PERFECT.
my apartment gets no light so i would be afraid to paint a whole wall black, but i did do a banner of high gloss black at the top of my walls in the bedroom.
I used benjamin moores Black Panther 2125-10 in their glossiest paint.. It took 3 coats (the first two coats looked like a gray navy blue) but the one foot banner made it just a enough darker and cozier in my bedroom.
i LOVE cindy gallop's apartment. i want all her accessories.
I love black walls! If your bed is against it, use a medium tone on the bed, and accent the walls with bright white picture frames to set it off. You'll love the contrast without feeling caved in by the big dark wall.
My bedroom is very very dark gray (Bher Ultra in Intellectual - only two coats needed!) and I will never have light walls in a bedroom again. It is so calming and serene.
We call the bedroom "the cave" because you can sleep there any time of day as long as the shade is pulled.
Bright color pops of cyan blue, and white furniture keeping the room happy. The color gray is rich and creamy, with earthy undertones, so it's not goth or depressing at all. I can't rave about it enough. Couldn't be happier with taking the plunge into dark walls.
My wife and I have a black den and we really like it. We painted one of the walls white for accent/light and the rest black. We also have a four inch white base molding and a 2-3" white crown and a white ceiling. The whole room is black, white and silver with the color coming in through art work and accessories that we have yet to purchase (still waiting on the perfect things). It is a small room but it looks great. I don't remember the brand or color of paint we used. I do find that our black walls show so much more dust and finger prints than any other color in our house. Good luck, it is a really neat look when done properly!
Check out door sixteen for lots of black wall inspiration! She's also used black-on-black wallpaper to great effect in an office, and the pattern adds interest to the dark color.
I love, love black walls and have had them in my home for years. Zinzer will cover anything!
My husband and I are getting ready to do this in our bedroom. We are going to paint all the walls black and use cream and white accents.
Here's a suggestion for you: DON'T PAINT ONE WALL ANY COLOR. It almost never looks good. I firmly contend that all walls should be painted the same color. I recently had an apartment with glossy black wall and white trim. Next time I go black, I will do the trim black as well. But maybe matte. Or vice versa. Maybe matte walls and glossy trim. Anyway: PLEASE DON"T FALL VICTIM TO THE CCENT WALL.
Accent walls work if you know what you are doing and in the right context. Also, design is so subjective and personal in many ways so it's not necessarily right or wrong
I painted my 12x7 bathroom a gorgeous dark gray. Looks deep navy in electric light. Valspar hematite, 4006-2C.
I love a dark and bold color!! It makes a statement...
"Accent walls work if you know what you are doing and in the right context."
Most folks think that painting one wall of their bland beige box a great color will pull their room together - and it doesn't.
Selecting coordinating colors for different walls can work - ie: Black on one wall and Grey on the other 3 - but otherwise, Omartiger is right.
I painted my bedroom dark blue, Abyss from Benjamin Moore in Eggshell sheen. I love, love, love it! The ceiling is gray, and I have a yellow/ochre bedspread from West Elm, a orange/yellow jerry johnson chair, and some art to brighten it up. But the dark walls make my room feels so cozy and intimate at night. I live high up in a lofted space with views of the city, and one wall is all windows. The dark paint allows me to forego curtains (there are privacy shades) and enjoy the night time city views. The walls were originally white and light just bounced off them making my room too bright at night.
Ashk, what color grey did you use on your walls? I would love to paint my bedroom a dark grey but am having trouble finding the right paint number.
Get as matte of paint as you can. Dark paint is not forgiving if you're an amateur painter like myself.
I used benjamin moore "raccoon fur" for my bathroom and entry. It looks fabulous. It's a really dark charcoal grey. I'm loving dark right now.
I would go for it! I have had a dark grey bedroom and now in another house the accent wall is Black with a lighter grey on the other walls. I love the dark colors especially with all the white moldings, white bedding and accessories it really pops.
Don't be so cautious - paint the walls! All of them! Accent walls are for suburbanites who watch too much HGTV, and they look terrible almost every time.
It has been my experience that super-dark walls are as easy to live with as white (probably even easier) and provide a great backdrop for any style. Don't overthink it. And buy some lamps.
What a timely post. I'm toying with painting my bathroom black (or dark, dark grey). I think it will look sharp against our tan countertop and shower curtain. The only thing I'm concerned about is, as mentioned above, highlighting wall imperfections with the necessary (I think?) semi-gloss finish.
That trick absolutely works (painting walls a dark color so as to give the illusion of a larger space). My boyfriend and I painted his tiny room a very dark shade of red, and it turned out fantastic.
These photos and comments have my creative juices flowing...I see a weekend project in my future!
When I was a teenager I desperately wanted black walls in my bedroom. My mother's compromise was to let me paint just two walls black. It ended up looking a bit odd. I now have very dark grey walls in my bedroom and love the look. I think it's wise to take the plunge and paint the whole room, otherwise the contrast ends up being less than restful.
Anyone knows where to find the white bedding in picture 3? Thanks!
After searching the net, I was able to find the source of the beautiful white bed linens; just wanted to share, in case if anyone else is curious...

Thank you, Xenia! I was loving that bedding. Too bad it's Dry Clean, otherwise, it would be mine! It appears to have West Elm's pintuck bedding beat by a mile.
I want to paint half down of my room walls black a white moulding in middle and half top a white or very light grey. All my furniture are white and want a splash of a lime green, but of course being scared of the black color and boyfriend already scaring me about it. So I dont know what to do.. HELP PLEASE...
