Q: I know it's best not to set up your office in your bedroom, but my small apartment with a large bedroom, small kitchen and living room demands it. How can I set this up best so I can sleep peacefully, have a sacred space, and get my bills paid?

I also just moved into a new apartment and am facing the exact same situation. The way I am setting it up right now is that the tv and tv stand are sitting across from the bed. My desk is set up along the same wall but toward the corner. I also have a screen divider to somewhat separate the two areas, but still debating if I should leave the divider there. The trick of having your office in the bedroom is to keep the area clean and neat. The last thing you want to see when you first open your eyes in the morning is a mess on your desk. =)
Not sure what your closet situation is, but if you mainly store clothes in a dresser I'd set up office in the closet so that you can just close the doors/pull a curtain shut when not in use.
melina - my situation is like yours, with my desk being in my bedroom. i've learned to:
1) keep my desk mostly tidy, and put things away at the end of the workday so i'm not tempted to peruse them before bed
2) shut down all computers, and face hard drives and electronics away from my bed so i dont see lights, or hear fans.
3) dont use my desk as a place to drop off clutter, but designate an inbox to put bills and action items.
works out just fine for me! good luck ...
Either use a piece of furniture to enclose your office completely when you're not working - such as an office armoire:

...or if you need more space - put your office in the Living Room and set up your bedroom as both sitting and sleeping area.
I also have the same issue in my apartment. Do you have a spare closet you can turn into a home office? This way you could close the door and leave the office in the closet. If you are like me and don't have that option, I find it best to not only keep the office area clean like pier723 said, but keeping the bedroom neat is important as well (ie: making the bed every morning, putting clothes away, etc.) Also, when creating your office space think up, to allow yourself plenty of paper storage so at the end of the day you can clean up your space neatly.
I have a few pictures of my office on my blog if you look under the bedroom post for inspiration.

Wow that was long! Sorry, but I hope I helped.
-Keep the desk free of clutter
-Some kind of visual separator (room divider, curtain, bookshelf, etc)
I like Martha Stewart's idea of two bookcases converted to an armoire.

I'd suggest something like the compact "office" from C&B (below). That way you can close the doors and store your files without taking up a lot of space. It's worked well in spaces for several of my friends that I suggested it to.

Try to put the work area where it isn't instantly visable from the bed. Make the desk and storage the same color as the walls, so it blends in. Put a large piece of art near-by to attract attention away from the work area.
Make the chair part of the bedroom furniture, and only incidental to the work space. Hang a piece of fabric on the chair back that echos your bedding. Have two matching chairs that bracket the work area, so that it seems more like a sitting area.
Do you have curtains on the windows? Then suspend a single curtain from the ceiling to obscure the work area, or tack curtain fabric to a floor screen.
Do you have to have the office set up at all times? Do you have a dining room table? Do you have a laptop?
I set up my home office inside a large photographer's box. I drop all the bills in the box when they arrive, and keep everything I will need for tax time in the bottom. I keep a pen, stamps, notebook, and checkbook in the box, and with my laptop, I set up my desk at the dining room table. I have plenty of room to spread out when I'm working on a project, and when I'm done, my box and laptop go onto the shelf in the living room closet.
I was fortunate to have had a home office at one time, but I found myself with my laptop and my box of bills at the dining room table instead. I just preferred to be in the dining room at a large table vs. tucked away at a small desk. To each his own.
Some very good advice by the AT readers above...and kudos to you for recognizing that having your office set up in your bedroom is not great for your ch'i. If it can't go anywhere else (closet, laptop moved to other rooms at night, etc) consider throwing a beautiful cloth over it (after it's turned off of course) while not in use. Or, a decorative screen or curtain can cordon off the desk area. If your room is large enough or you are in a one room open plan loft, consider sectioning it off with a tall wall of furniture/room dividers to have bed on one side and desk/office on other. In one guest room I did, I used a bed with a very high headboard and centered it in the middle of the room. Placed the small writing desk catty cornered behind the headboard (not facing it). This is okay in a guest room or vacation rental but wouldn't be a good solution long term.
Swap your bedroom and living room? So that your office + living room can be in the larger room?
Or...set off part of the bedroom (the part closest to the door) as your office space.
I wish I had the space to employ some of these ideas! My desk (with iMac) sits at the end of my bed because there is absolutely nowhere else to put it. Add that to my tiny cheap IKEA wardrobe and hand me down chest of drawers, I have no storage at all so the room is so cluttered! I've invested in under-the-desk shelves (which means no room to swing your legs) and lots of big white boxes for my junk, but UGH! What I wouldn't give for a separate space for my office.

I just wanted to say that this is a stupid, stupid policy, considering half the time the pictures submitted do not help people answer the question being asked. :|
One of the best things that worked for me in my office/bedroom was to lay a large light colored carpet down that covers the "bedroom" section of the room, and the dark hardwood underneath shows in the "office" section. This really helps distinguish the two upon walking into the space. I also arranged all of my office furniture to face the desk and away from the bed. All of the bedroom furniture faces the bed and away from the desk.

Everytime I am at Ikea I always like this secretary style desk. Plus it also has a hutch that can go on top and a bench with room for hanging files.

I've had home office/bedroom shared incarnations in many places that I've lived and the ONLY way it works for me is if I have the office in a closed cabinet (I use an old Regency-style secretary). That way I can work, then 'close up shop', do a little light yoga as a transition, and head to bed. That ritual has become so ingrained that within 10 minutes I can shut down my work brain enough that sleep is accessible within minutes.
