Q: I just renovated my bathroom and added some built in cabinets next to and over the toilet. I'm wondering where to put a hand towel holder. Should I use a circle to the right of the mirror or use a bar under the cabinet above the toilet? If I use a circle to left, at what height?

What about a circle on wall to the left of the sink that we can't see? Seems like it would be handy to the sink if you can mount it below or beside the switches.
PS When I mount I try to keep the towel at elbow height and as close to the sink as possible, which means the bottom of the ring is a few inches above my elbow.
How about folding the towel over the washhand basin, to reduce clutter. I love your green, what colour is it,
it looks like F & B Apple Green.
What is on the left hand side? Its hard to see from the photo. I like this Bathroom, its very zesty and calming.
Circular towel holder next to the mirror. Depending on the length of your towel, you want the bottom of the towel to elbow height, like Robotropolis said, and not touching the top of your backsplash. No one wants a towel bar above a toilet.
Hi Jane, The placing of your bathroom is like mine, I used an antique iron coat hook insted of a circle. I love it.
i love the shower curtain, love to know where you got it.
Circle towel holder as cabinet pull. Center it on a cabinet that isn't used daily.
I tend to like hooks over bars and rings; you don't have to constantly re-fold the towel for it to look great, and it dries out way faster after use (I hate trying to dry my hands on a semi-moist, folded towel). They are also more inviting to use, as guests are not forced to spoil, and then try to recreate, that hotel-perfect towel bar. Either spot would work, as long as the length of the towel fits. Obviously, this is just my preference...
We use a neat little peg with success – I like it better than a ring for the same reasons mentioned above. And it's cheaper than a full ring and takes up less space. Ikea has a few good ones: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/34379685/ and http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30061247/ (that last one is the one I use) - And you hardly ever see it anyway since its covered up by the hand towel.
We just did a small powder room reno and took me a while to decide where to put the towel ring as well. I ended up putting it slightly lower to the sink as i have 2 small kids. We ordered a Restoration Hardware ring towel holder from ebay.com.
Btw, I have been looking for a light fixture like yours because it is easier to center it over the sink. Where did you get it? I like it!
I would put a hook on the right hand side of the mirror. I think a ring would look too big.
I love the shower curtain, btw :)
I have a deep aversion to towel rings, so I'd go with a short bar or funky hook (something in dark blue powder coated steel to go with the shower curtain) hung to the left of the sink on that stub wall.
Close to the sink and away from the toilet (potential airborne germs from flushing -- not that YOU would ever flush without shutting the lid, but you never know what people do behind closed doors!).
Personally, I don't like towel rings. Towels are damp and they dry better (and look better, too) when on a bar.
I would attach a bar on the right side of the vanity - there seems to be plenty of space between the vanity and the toilet.
Nice bathroom, btw! Love the green paint.
I agree with CREMEDELA; I wouldn't put it above or right next to the toilet because of spray! I'd try hanging a bar or hook to the left of the vanity if you have the space or you could even forget mounting anything & go with a small bar that fits over you vanity door/drawer, like this: http://www.target.com/p/interDesign-Over-the-Cabinet-Towel-Bar-Satin-Nickel/-/A-14028186
If you put it above the toliet , you'll probably regret it because of dripping water from just washed hands.
So funny - your bathroom is a virtual carbon copy of mine. We were debating the same thing, but I didn't want a bar (or towel) down next to the toilet so we put it (yes) right next to the mirror. I hung it a bit lower since I have kids, but the "drop" falls right in the void between the tank and the vanity - so there's only about 4" of towel below the sink deck.
Thanks for all the great comments!
I went with an antique 3 pronged hook, of which I have a bunch that are original to the house. After reading what everyone said, a hook made more sense. I placed it halfway between the mirror and the cabinet and halfway up the height of the mirror and the bottom of the towel hangs about 4" above the backsplash. I still have to figure out a second one for my 5 year old, it will probably go to the right and below the other one.
The shower curtain is from DENY Designs and the artist is Valentina Ramos.
After agonizing over wall and cabinet colors and using many samples, I ended up using a 50/50 mix of Sherwin Williams "Parakeet" and "Hearts of Palm to get the right shade. One was too dark/bright and the other was too light. The cabinets are "Zeus", all colors are from their Urban Organic Collection.
I should have stated that there are switches to the left of the mirror.
Thanks!
I'm in love with the hook idea to the right of the mirror. I'm also in love with the shower curtain. Great job on your bathroom reno!
Let me tell you this from experience. Anywhere you put the hand towels there will be dripped water. If you put the towels to the side of the sink, across from the sink, next to the sink, you will wiping up spilled water for the rest of your life.
Put the towel right above the sink, even if you don't like it.
I hate to be negative, but sometimes I feel like these "What should I do?" posts are really just a way for people to show off their homes and look for compliments. That shower curtain is amazing, and the paint job you've done on the cabinets looks great with the wall color. With all of this attention to the design, you really don't have one or two places in mind to put a bathroom towel holder?
