Let's face it, medicine cabinets in the bathroom can be downright boring. Most are a total snooze fest and we're all just sitting back and letting it happen. Believe me, I'm not one for super quirky design (I wish I could dump a can of white paint over my entire house) but I do think there's something that can be done to give the medicine cabinet a bit of a face lift.

I came across this funky yet fabulous suitcase medicine cabinet on the Turkish website, Limitsiz Enerji. I've talked about how important it is to reuse goods so we can all stop being so wasteful and plus, suitcases make excellent home accessories — so why not throw one on the wall and call it a medicine cabinet?
The trick is to find a smaller suitcase or better yet, a briefcase. You can easily add shelves with pieces of reclaimed wood or head down to your local hardware store and have pieces of wood cut to the measurements of the case. I love the look of keeping the wood natural (or even with a dark stain) but there's always the option of upholstering them to match the interior fabric of the case. Attach the case to the wall and add a mirror to the front of the case so it's functional both inside and out.
What do you think of suitcase medicine cabinets?

Great idea as a storage solution, but the mirror ruins it. Maybe in another room/context.
Love that!
LOVE!
Fabulous idea, but I don't think the leather would stand up to bathroom/mirror cleaning solutions for long. But maybe in my bedroom for my jewelry? Yea - I've even got the 1960 samsonite brief case to use! Thanks!
A vintage medicine cabinet makes a great spice rack in the kitchen also.
I was thinking same, lazy_lurker. We need something very slim for our bathroom for non-daily use items (bandaids, cold meds, etc.) and I think this would fit the bill nicely. But I wouldn't put a mirror on it, nor keep toothpaste, etc. in it.
I did this in our master bath, one for my husband and one for myself. No mirror, no jewelry, but I love both ideas. I don't use harsh cleaners; I just dust them. They've held up for at least 7 years. I didn't have any trouble installing a shallow shelf in each, even though my suitcase is round. There are several ways to install the shelves. I nailed into the shelves from the back (the unseen side against the wall) and, on each side, hammered a couple of decorative nails. This was so much easier than cutting into the wall and installing manufactured medicine cabinets.
I love this idea for the kids' bathroom, however we've got lovely original wooden cabinets. I might do this in my closet for jewelery, though.
It's a cute idea, to be sure.
Though I love the idea of a suitcase bar, too. Very "Mad Men." Especially if you use a vintage Samsonite.
maybe a hardcase ...but leather doesnt seems like it would keep well in the long term with excessive moisture or "feel" sanitary to me. i like hard surfaces in my bathroom.
This is SUCH a clever idea, and doesn't seem to gimicky in my opinion. I agree that bathroom moisture might be too much, but it could be a cool way to store/ display jewelry in the bedroom.
I don't understand all the hate for regular old medicine cabinets, especially the recessed variety. In a small space I think they are crucial to avoid clutter.
Great idea! Much better use, imo, than stacking them in random places and using them as not super accessible storage.
It's a bit... hm. I think without the handle would be better.
Such a creative way of re-purposing a vintage suitcase. My medicine cabinet is more traditional, since I need lots and lots of light. But I'm still in love with this idea. Maybe I can convert a suitcase into a drinks cabinet?
