Speaking of chalk... why not a board made out of slate tile (that doesn't even look like a game board when you're not using it) and actual chalk? You could use regular Scrabble tiles to play the game, and the chalk to write in your letters--the tiles would go into the "used" bowl when you write the corresponding letters onto the slate.
