1 & 2: Layer them! Ikea's classic signe rugs are a blogland favorite. We'll have to explore the full range of their usefulness in another post, but for now we can be content gushing over the breezy vibe this simple application provides. Talented Hollie from Life in the Fun Lane layered three to anchor her little spring breakfast nook. I fell in love with the idea when I spotted it in Ashley & Robert's home. It created such a beachy vibe on the tiny screened in porch in their rental.
3. Create a path. Kelley and Malcom McDowell used multiple antique Navajo rugs as a path leading to the door of their California home. The same carefree look can be achieved using inexpensive rag mats from most home goods stores.
4. Tack them to the wall. Ok, so I could see this suggestion going horribly wrong, but with patience and precision (AND a level) surrounding grass mats with molding in place of wallpapered panels could make an awesome statement. Courtney Coleman and Bill Brockschmidt applied the idea in a Florida home to great effect. They describe how the grass mats tone down the bold coral wall color and formality of the room while also adding warmth and texture.
5. Create a runner. The modest size of most floor mats makes them great for DIY runners. Stitch a few together, and you have a casual take on the classic hallway or stair runner, like this super textural example from Country Living.
6. Create an area rug. If simply layering mats is too casual for your tastes, try making the rugs into a more permanent arrangement by stitching a few together with yarn. For DIY instructions, check out this past post on How To Create a Quick, Cheap Rug.

option 5 has been on my diy list for months.
i'm taking a much-anticipated trip to ikea to pick up some $4 throw rugs for my kitchen. sewing them together should be a breeze, and will be a nice way to save some money and create the size i need.

I think the layering thing would be good for people who also like to decorate with pallets.
i think it just looks way too messy
The first three really look like putting rags to soak up water spilled on a carpet. Between the floor rags, the wet pages being dried on the clothes line, and the porcelain mushrooms being served for lunch - that's an eating nook I don't care for.
I agree with ferha. The only time you'll catch any room in my house looking like photo 1 is if you interrupt me while I'm cleaning up a mess on the floor.
This is one of those things that you see in decorating books that doesn't work at all for real life.
Cute looking, but I can see these getting bunched up quite easily and someone tripping over them.
