Q: My 11-month-old son is really great at getting his suction toddler bowls to un-suction. Any idea on where to get a bowl that has really good suction? I'm pretty much thinking I may have to super-glue his bowl to his high chair and call it a day.

Editor: I hate to sound pessimistic, but I never found a suction bowl my son couldn't defeat. (But he did grow out of wanting to pick it up!). Readers, what's the strongest suction bowl you've found?

Try the lil' diner. It's freaking awesome. My son couldn't get it off the table. You can even YouTube it. The best thing ever! Lildiner.com
Vital Baby Unbelievabowl has really strong suction.
As soon as the child throws the bowl, say "no throwing the bowl" and remove the bowl and take them out of the high chair and walk away. Repeat as necessary, but the behavior should change as long as you are consistent and don't give them the bowl back.
Buying more gear to deal with something like that is rarely necessary - shoot our ancestors certainly didn't have suction bowls!
Well said PineTree! Consistency is the key word.
Suction bowls are a challenge for kids. The stronger suction, the bigger the challenge.
Regular bowls are much better. The kid will learn that if s/he dumps out the contents, they are no longer available.
ha! 11 months? it may take a good year for the psychological/behavioral approach to work...ive watched my 3 year old brother in law (yes, brother in law) throw his sippy cup repeatedly to the floor for 2 full years!
nope. no suction cups can be stronger than a 1 year old. sorry. i'd say distraction is your best key. try pushing him/her up to the table with a large dinner tray or giving new eating utensils. after that you have to keep encouraging him/her to use his/her spoon/fork whatever. and keep doing it for about the next 6 mo. after that you are golden. parenting is a lot about repeating yourself. welcome.
We just stopped giving our son a bowl until he was over the throwing stage.
You certainly can train a small baby. We started at 8 months teaching our little girl not to throw her dishes, etc and it didn't take long at all. We emphasize behavior at the table to save the rest of the family from indigestion!
I don't think the same goes for all kids. My son is 2 1/2. And he still wants to throw food, and try to shove his fork into the crevice of the table, no matter how many times I take it away from him. Same for tantrums. Kids will have them no matter what you do.
I have the bowl pictured above and it lost its suction. Instead, we started removing him from the table when he threw his bowl... it didn't take long to figure out to keep the bowl on the table. It still happens off and on, but such is life with a toddler.
Thank you to those that posted recommendations! Taking them out of the highchair sounds like a great idea but when you have a child who's already underweight, there's no way I'm taking him out of the highchair as long as foods making it into his mouth!
What we do now is use one of the suction cup placemats on our table (with an Ikea highchair pulled up) and just put the food directly on that.
