"SuperSpeed USB" Offers Big Transfer Rate and Power Boost

It can take awhile for a new technology to become a standard in the consumer market. For example, USB 3.0 was introduced way back in 2008, but we're only now seeing a steady stream of compliant devices widely available. And now USB 3.0 is getting a big specifications boost...

The upgraded USB 3.0 standard announced at the Intel Developers Forum and dubbed, "SuperSpeed USB", will boost transfer speeds up to 10Gb/s, but require new cables. The good news? USB 3.0's higher capacity bandwidths fortunately will not necessarily require a hardware upgrade beyond the cables, and will be able to deliver up to 100W to power connected peripherals.

"With the new SuperSpeed USB enhancement to increase performance up to 10Gb/s data rate, coupled with the USB power delivery specificaton capable of delivering up to 100 watts of power to USB-enabled devices, consumers will soon be able to have one USB cable to support all their needs," said Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF president and COO

But what about USB 3.0 today? There are several useful 3.0 enabled peripherals which take advantage of the current usable data rate of up to 4 Gbit/s we can recommend if you've been holding out till now with 1.0 or 2.0 transfer speeds:

1. Moshi Cardette 3.0 - $48.95
A multifunctional card reader like this one from Moshi handles CF, SD, microSD, Memory Stick and more, alongside offering a two port USB hub. If you're transferring files from external sources regularly, why not do it faster and easier?

2. Seagate Expansion Hard Drive 3TB - $119.99
With all the media we carry and produce these days, there is never enough storage. But 3TB is a good starting off point, and the sweet spot when factoring in cost vs. capacity.

3. LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 120GB SSD - $149.99
An external SSD is practically standard issue amongst pro-sumers who work with photo and video files regularly. There may not be a better looking external SSD drive on the market than this Porsche / LaCie collaboration.

4. Mimobot USB Drive - $39.99
This limited edition drive in the likeness of an R2-A6 Star Wars droid was released for the recently geek-celebrated, May the 4th Be With You celebration date and is available in Millennium Falcon fast SuperSpeed USB 3.0. May the Force also be with new director J.J. Abrams while he helms the franchise for the next generation!

5. Amazon Basics USB 3.0 Extension Cable - $7.49
Give some of your components that extra extension they need with a low priced USB cable. As usual, the Amazon Basic line offers both good value and quality with a no-frills option.
