It is an AMAZING site. I just signed up in January and have received dozens of books for free. Most of them were from my Amazon.com wishlist. I've literally saved hundreds of dollars with this site!

Check it out for all the details but basically you list the books you'd like to get rid of and receive points for doing so and then can use those points to "mooch" books from others. The only catch is you have to pay the postage to send books to other people but you can control if you only send them within your own country or all over the world.

The site is open to all countries, not limited to just North America. I highly recommend it. I can't say enough good things about it. (And no, I'm not affiliated with it in any way!) Happy mooching!

This website has worked out really well for me, and the books I've gotten have always been in really good condition. However, I haven't used it in awhile, because now I just prefer to take books out at the library. That way I can read as many books as I want and not build up any book clutter.

I use paperbackswap.com and swapacd.com and I love them both. I've gotten rid of a TON of books I didn't want any more and I've gotten lots of new CDs recently. You pay for postage when you send material but receieve the books/CDs for free. Its a little slow to start off because people have to receive the things you send before you get to request things from others, but once things get rolling its great.

I belong to both Paperbackswap & Bookmooch and love each.... but they are different environments.

I've been on Paperbackswap for over three years & have traded over 900 books. I've been on Bookmooch for just under a year & have traded almost 150 books. Some books are easier to get on PBS & others are more readily found on BM.

The biggest differences besides availability of books is that PBS is very structured & BM is a little 'looser'. Both sites work for me..... and I have the bookshelves to prove it.

Just a note that I keep my books cataloged on Librarything.com ... that site helps me keep track of what I own or have read, as well as keeping me informed (through the group forums & the "suggester") about books by favorite authors & ideas for other books I might like to read. ... very good for organizing all of the books I've gained by trading!!

I use Paperback swap. I was finally able to clear space on my bookshelf by getting rid of all those books I didn't want. Now it's full again because I have a ton of new books to read!

Suggestion 1: When signing up is to only list 10 books right away. This gets you the two credits you need to start getting books for yourself. If you try to put all your books up at once you will have several days of just wrapping and shipping books. It can be overwhelming.

Suggestion 2: Do a book search for "All Books" so you can add items to your wishlist if they are not currently in stock.

I am another Bookmoocher... been using the sight since almost the beginning. It's my primary source for books now. The best thing about it is that it's free to use... the only cost you incur is the cost of sending out books. It's really helped me cut down on clutter.

I did the CD thing for a while on Lala.com. That was good service, but I just found I didn't have enough CD's to get rid of to make it worth while.

I was happy to see this post! I use bookmooch.com as well and I started out on it as a way to reduce clutter in my home (which made my hubby very happy!). I love books and reading but this way I keep only the ones that I truly treasure and save money by not buying new books all the time. Great post!

I use Paperbackswap and I love it. But I had never heard of Bookmooch. Hmmm....

I use Swaptree. I don't own a lot of books, so I haven't done many swaps. The last one I did though, I didn't receive a book in trade, which was really disapointing.

I've been using novelaction.com for about 2 years and am crazy about it.

You can either choose books off the site and then send yours in to exchange, or I prefer to use bookbucks where I send in a huge box (usually 30 or so) and get bookbucks. I have alerts set up for my authors and when I get the emails that books by my authors have arrived, I just order them and I get my box of books in about a week.

The books are always in great shape and you can get paperbacks and hardbacks and the service is great too. I've gotten everyone at work hooked and highly recommend them to everyone.

These book exchange sites are the best thing since bubblegum!!!!. Haven't heard of some of these. I use Novel Action as well (http://www.novelaction.com) and have literally completely swapped out my entire library of books. Found some really cool new authors too. The shipping is dirt cheap 'cause they ship all the books together in 1 box. You guys should check it out!!

Hi, I know I'm late to post here, but I wanted to thank you for posting this article. I just joined Paperback Book Swap yesterday, and I'm really excited. The libraries here in PR don't have too much selection in English, so I've just been buying lots of books- this will help me out so much (and delay my kindle purchase!). Anyway, I think the time I used to spend on facebook will now be better spent on PBS!

I know this is an old thread- but I have been really happy with PaperbackSwap.com. It's really great for browsing and finding books and authors you did not know about. If you read one book by an author, you can put on your wish list other books by that author or other books in a series and you will be offered that book when another member puts it in the system. The local library does not work for me because their limited hours do not work for me- I can't get there and browse during the business day. I used to spend $50 or more per month on paperback books, and since I have a clutter problem the books would really pile up. But I like trading them to someone else who really wants that particular book (as opposed to donating it to charity, where it may not end up in the hands of someone who likes that genre). Also the library does not have a big selection in the genres I like. So PaperbackSwap has been great for me!
