I've experienced just about every type of burglary since moving to a big city, but last summer something was stolen that I never could've imagined: my plants. Shortly after planting our building's window box gardens, we experienced a strange phenomenon — every couple of days for several weeks we found gaping holes in the window boxes where a plant was supposed to be. This wasn't just someone being destructive and breaking the boxes, or throwing the plants on the ground, they were actually taking our plants and our neighbor's, too.
While we thought this couldn't possibly be a common occurrence, earlier this year You Grow Girl posted that her plants were being stolen and her readers chimed in that theirs were too! Apparently someone out in the world has a pretty nice garden thanks to all of its neighbors.
After a few weeks, we posted a sign in each window box politely asking for the thief to stop stealing our plants and thanked them kindly in advanced. You know what happened? The thievery stopped!
Who knows if it's actually because of the signs, however, later that summer someone cut down a tree next to our building to steal a bike that had been locked to it, so you know, crazy stuff happens.
